While off the Japanese island of Chichijima on this day in history on Sept. 2, 1944, then-future President George H.W. Bush was the only survivor after his aircraft was shot down by enemy fire, according to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.
At the time, Lt. Junior Grade George Bush was a pilot with Torpedo Squadron Fifty-One (VT-51) aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto (CVL-30), a light carrier that was deployed in the North Pacific, according to U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command.
Bush’s squadron was conducting a bombing mission when it encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire, according to records from the U.S. Navy.
"The engine on Bush’s plane was set ablaze, yet Bush managed to release his bombs and head back toward the aircraft carrier San Jacinto before bailing out over the water," said History.com.
Bush parachuted safely into the water.

GHWBush was derp state- Rockefeller repub, Reagan regrettably accepted at the convention. He did not want him.
And look what we got.
One other thing. GHWBush was not the only survivor of that bombing mission. Many of his squadron were captured by Jap navy and taken to a POW area...tortured, cooked and Lord Bless and Keep them—eaten. Japanese cannibals pagans who thought it gave them power over enemies. Don’t know if they ever answered for this appalling atrocity.
I know people don’t think much of the Bushes politically. But HW had some balls. First, flying off a carrier and then having to ditch in the middle of the ocean. You have to respect that.
And as much as people think W got a pass to get out of Vietnam, the guy flew jets. They don’t let just anyone fly jets. The Air Force is pretty particular about who they trust with those things.
How many past Presidents (or future ones) have taken the controls of a jet? And landed on a carrier? As much as I wasn’t a fan of McCain...he had stones as well.
Politics aside, those guys are a different breed. I think we will see similar folks from the next generation. But that’s a few cycles away.
Most of industrial America supported the rise of the nazis. They were good for business.
It wasn’t until we learned their business model was very flawed that everyone turned back to the US.
History hides a lot of unfortunate things. It’s not like you cannot find evidence of this stuff. Its just that no one usually goes looking for it.
