Hoekstra pledges to phase-out fossil fuel subsidies [EU climate action commissioner]

Wopke Hoekstra, the former Dutch minister of finance and commissioner designate for climate action, vowed to lay the basis for a Green Deal 2.0 in his bid to convince members of the climate committee in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday (2 October).

He would not be a simple “caretaker commissioner,” said Hoekstra, even though his term will end with the current commission next year.

He pledged to commit to reducing CO2 emissions by 90 percent by 2040 and finalize plans in January, following the advice of the EU advisory board for the climate. And he had some strong language on phasing out fossil fuel.

“Fossil fuels must become history. The sooner the better,” said Hoekstra, a former Shell employee. “The fact that certain oil majors have long known about their role in climate change and sought to ignore the evidence, I truly find unethical.”

He also advocated for a global kerosene tax for aviation, telling MEPs that the cost of fuel at “the pump” consists of sixty percent taxes in the Netherlands, describing the discrepancy as “absurd.”

To garner support from his own political group, the European People’s Party (EPP), he also promised assistance for farmers who have a “right to earn a decent living.” …

Subsidies and so-called climate change are separate issues, but so-called “climate action” depredations are what’s unethical.

Why anybody needs “climate action commissioner”?

Last I checked, fossil fuels are taxed very heavily, a lot more than other products. I do not thing they benefit from subsidies. I think, he considers some breaks from oversized taxation a subsidy?!

The EUSSR loves their unelected commissioners.

And they don’t have a concept of unsubsidized energy companies.

Last month a German car maker announced that they were ceasing production of two EV models. When you read the details, the reason is because the German government has ended EV subsidies. There is no market for EVs.

I listen to radio stations from Europe, particularly the British Isles. They’ve been trying very hard to push EVs in advertising. Nobody trusts the firetraps.

Okay. He selected 90% by 2040. Since he has a date, where is the project plan? Where is the risk analysis, cost, vendors, and milestones?

Hoaxstra sounds like another one of those who never learned anything about CO2 in school.

How do you like his idea for a “global” tax on aviation kerosene?

Fixed... Science, economics, you name it, he doesn't understand it.
