‘*** You *****’: Cops Handcuff 9-Year-Old Throwing Tantrum at Florida Elementary School

Bodycam footage shows the moments Florida police handcuffed a 9-year-old at Stenstrom Elementary School in February. Oviedo police detained the fourth-grade student for 13 minutes after he wouldn’t stop throwing an aggressive tantrum in the school’s mail room.

The child’s family is now suing the city and the school resource officers involved in handcuffing their son. The Law&Crime Network’s Elizabeth Millner breaks it down.

Nope
You are wrong.

I have an autistic son. He was ridiculed, beat by the usual suspects and completely left out by everyone. Including teachers. I’d get banned for what I think of these “teachers” or other “better than u know who’s”
I went to his school when they had an incident with my son. Nobody talked about why it happened. (Usual ghetto trash picking on him)
Just that it did. Cops were there to cuff him if it got to scary for the princesses that were the teachers.. I had to pick him up and carry my 12 yo son out of a school that was “safe” for him there. Turns out the class/school tough kid unchecked him in front of the “teachers” and my son then reacted. In front of the teacher in the class.
I know what that little boy went through. I had him I’m my arms at one time. If it had been at an earlier time in history. That cop would have been a dead man. He chose the wrong way.
PO’ed when I see people in power do this to children. I have no sympathy for strong arming young children.

My 2 daughters weren’t diagnosed with ADHD until high school and we saw no need to start medication for them, although they decided in adulthood that medication was optimal for them. My son, on the other hand, was in danger of being expelled from kindergarten due to his ADHD, which is why we turned to medication.

We tried a variety of sports for him, but if a kid is bored on the T ball or soccer field plus not athletically inclined to begin with, they’ll only find more “creative ways” to deal with their inattention and hyperactivity.

My son was also identified as gifted (IQ 140) in first grade so it’s doubly harder to educate a kid like that. He attended 11 schools in 12 yrs as we tried to find the best educational environment for him. He ended up graduating from high school at 16-1/2 and eventually earned a BA degree, but it definitely wasn’t easy.

Unless you have children with ADHD, or deal with it yourself as hubby and I both do, you really don’t get it and your treatment “regimen” is just an opinion.

The foul things he was shouting at the teachers he must have heard in his home. That poor kid—he is ruined for life without a miracle conversion. Talk about your school to jail pipeline. Those parents need to be in cuffs.

rewards do not change his behavior because he cycles in and out of all this similarly to the Cycle of Abuse (if someone could post a pic of that I would be grateful, it would help in understanding.

Cops should be provided with strait jackets so the aggressors cannot injure themselves and others ... an appropriate medical intervention method.

I was thinking the same thing-- they ought to have some kind of swaddle blanket with velcro straps. Lay it on the floor, "encourage" the kid to lie down, and roll him up in it, making sure he can breathe. But if the kid is flailing and kicking, no doubt the worthless parents would sue over that, too.

One of the world's most famous and productive autistic people is Dr. Temple Grandin, who specializes in cattle movement equipment to get the cattle into the trucks or the slaughterhouses with minimal stress and "fighting back." She designed a calming contraption for herself when she feels stressed in which she lies down sandwiched between two boards with blankets.

The Calming Effect: Temple Grandin
there's a video demo of the "hug machine" at this link

I amgoing to assume this incident is taking place in a “normal” school rather than a special ed program. When children who are unable to control themselves are “mainstreamed” into schools designed for “normal” kids, those who act out beyond a “safe” level will inevitably have to be “controlled” by force. The kid in this video needs medical/mental health intervention, not coddling, or holding up riot pads until he tires of wrecking the place and throwing things.

The video shows teachers and the officer behaving calmly and focusing on protecting the out-of-control child from harming himself and others, while patiently calming him down. That the parents would sue over this makes me guess that they are in a state of denial, and have insisted that the school accommodate their child’s intractable behavior, rather than seeking proper treatment or a more appropriate situation.

Rather than spew more ignorant speculations — what is the state of the art for “treating” an intelligent child with medium autism? Does it find much success? (And what is “success”?)

And so is yours, I don’t think for children or adults for that matter it’s a good idea to take mind altering drugs just to go thru life.

Drug dependency just to. cope with life often times leads to illegal and other prescription drugs such as antidepressants.

You have to ask yourself why is the USA an outlier in the use of ADHD medications compared to the rest of the western world by a wide margin, we are one of if not the only countries that allows pharmaceutical advertising, we are a nation of drug addicts from the people living on the streets to normal people living on multiple medications just to cope with daily life

Except I have many years of experience dealing with ADHD and you apparently don’t. My opinion is based on the evidence I’ve gathered from struggling with this condition personally and in my family. But thanks for insinuating we’re all druggies based on your “vast knowledge” of the subject. /s

You have no idea what my experience is, you’re assuming something that may not be true.

All you have to do is be able to read to know the USA is a nation of drug addicts both illegal and prescription.

If you are hyperactive, take a drug, if you are fat, take a drug, if you are depressed, take a drug, a lot of the drugs people take are not fixing anything they are masking the issue.

Your response is almost textbook when I express my opinion about the drug epidemic in the country, especially among children.

I stand by the belief that many of the kids taking ADHD drugs today don’t need them if they changed their diets, got a higher level of physical activity and had their computer games and phones taken away.

While I don’t like his politics, I did like the hunter-farmer theory of Thomas Hartmann.

Can you believe that some children are hyperactive because of the environment (physical activity replaced by screentime, etc.) and yet some children having higher activity levels genetically?

Yes, it is a shame when active kids live in a society that has no place for them and in which they are forced to behave in a way that is against their nature, but I do believe that they exist and it is not nurture but nature.

Not everyone’s children are like your children are. There is a huge variety in children. In the olden days, “hyperactive” kids would drop out and find, or not find, some work that suited them. Nowadays, they are regimented into the factory production line of school.

Exactly, perhaps because I grew up in a farming community, our family grew most of our vegetables and beef, pork, chicken and game meat, the nearest grocery store was 20 miles away and we went there on the weekends for soaking, toilet paper, etc. I grew up eating a natural food diet fast food was a rare occurrence in our family, not a main source of food.

I played sports in high school and worked on a farm in the spring and summer picking watermelons, tobacco and bailing hay

I never heard of ADHD or hyperactivity until I was well out of college and years into my work career

How lucky for you that you lived in Lake Wobegone, where all the children are above average!

Or maybe your school was so tiny that you knew the personal problems each and every student faced?

Or maybe you are old enough that ADHD was still called hyperactivity and was rarely diagnosed except in extreme cases? (Don’t worry, that is my age.)

ADHD is not *just* wanting to move more than average, although when I was growing up, being consigned to a desk all day would have been tough on a hyperactive child. ADHD and ADD also involve problems with paying attention. Throughout my school years, my teachers complained about my lack of attention, etc. but only one doctor ever alluded to “hyperactivity” as it was then known. He said I seemed like a hyperactive child without the activity aspect.

For kids who are “well-disciplined,” they may manage to stay in their seats all day, knowing they will catch it at school and at home if they don’t. But they may not be able to also keep their mouths shut and continually speak in class when they are not supposed to. Their minds may continually drift...

And you might not have known about any of this or thought of it as a symptom of hyperactivity/ADHD, because back then, you jad to have a pretty severe case to be diagnosed.

But as is often the case, one person’s limited experience is not sufficient evidence on which to base an opinion. Just because I rarely saw boys in grades 2 through 8 doesn’t mean that boys were few and far between, just that I went to an all-girls school.
