Medical discovery for sepsis moves to next phase of human trials (Sodium ascorbate = Full recovery in three hours & no side effects)

Scientists have proven that a formulation they pioneered alleviates deadly sepsis.

Promising results from an initial clinical trial show that sodium ascorbate—a pH-balanced formulation of vitamin C—is effective in treating sepsis.

Yugeesh Lankadeva said sepsis is notoriously difficult to treat and is often deadly.

"Sepsis accounts for 35–50 percent of all hospital deaths. It occurs when the immune system fails to fight off an underlying infection, causing life-threatening falls in blood pressure, multiple organ failure, and death," Lankadeva said.

"In our trial, patients were given sodium ascorbate into their bloodstream, resulting in promising improvements to multiple organs."

Rinaldo Bellomo, said the previous part of the trial in his department involved 30 adult sepsis patients between October 2020 and November 2022.

While receiving hospital intensive care, half the patients were randomly allocated to receive sodium ascorbate, and the other half a placebo. The study found that patients with sepsis who received the sodium ascorbate treatment:

—produced more urine, a sign of improved kidney function

—required less of the clinically used drug, noradrenaline, to restore blood pressure

—showed signs of improved function in multiple organs.

"Sepsis is the biggest killer in intensive care units," Professor Bellomo said. "It often develops so quickly that patients are already critically ill by the time they reach us. A treatment that acts quickly, is safe and highly effective would be an absolute game-changer."

"Through our showing reduced levels of oxygen in tissues in sepsis, we identified sodium ascorbate as a possible treatment. We've seen dramatic results in our work with preclinical studies, where an extremely high dose of sodium ascorbate resulted in full recovery within just three hours, with no side effects. It's heartening to see all those years of painstaking research pay off with a treatment now within reach for patients," Professor May said.

The amounts used were huge, but had absolutely no side effects.

Patients were given sodium ascorbate, first as 30 grams over one hour, followed by another 30 grams, given over the next five hours, according to the abstract.

These are incredible doses that are far beyond what doctors would have likely experimented with, before, in my humble opinion.

Interesting. I’ve seen a protocol for treating whooping cough with sodium ascorbate.

The vit c/sepsis connection has been studied awhile...and if I were in sepsis situation, I would demand it.

A couple years ago THIS came out...
https://www.npr.org/2021/02/23/970672328/vitamin-c-apparently-not-useful-for-sepsis-after-all

Vitamin C in high doses is good for many things. But few docs will tell their patients that.

Sodium ascorbate is basically Vitamin C. Vit C in the form of a salt.

If I remember right Linus Pauling used to take 20,000mg or some such of Vit C every day. Most people would get stomach cramps and diarrhea at those dose but Linus apparently built up tolerance. It could be 10,000mg I am not sure.

Would have been nice to compare the death rates of the two groups. Would also been nice to know the patients treatment regimen, vasopressor dose, and the antibiotics used. And how soon after sepsis was determined that the therapy was started. Pt coming in with full blown sepsis is different from someone whose sepsis develops after admission. What were the steroid doses?
Kinda weak sauce if no difference of mortality was demonstrated. Just sayin’

I do recall a few interviews with family members saying that the hospitals told them that vitamin C supplementation was ‘unavailable’. One was told, “We don’t have that.”

The article explained that the dosage needed to start in the ER, and not when moved to ICU. Hours make a difference in all treatments of infections.

A cure for sepsis?

A critical-care physician at Eastern Virginia Medical School has found what he believes is a cure for sepsis. The discovery came by accident as Paul Marik, MBBCh, was treating a patient who was dying of sepsis.

Below is the treatment protocol (current as of March 2017), a link to the study in the journal CHEST and background materials for medical professionals and media professionals.

Read more in the EVMS digital magazine.

See coverage from NPR and in The Virginian-Pilot.

For medical professionals
Sepsis treatment protocol
Vitamin C: 1.5 g IV q 6 hourly for 4 days or until discharge from the ICU.

Hydrocortisone: 50mg IV q 6 hourly for 4 days or until discharge from the ICU. Taper is not required.

Thiamine: 200mg IV q 12 hourly for 4 days or until discharge from the ICU. Alternative dosing: 100mg IV q 6 hourly for 4 days.

Sepsis: A global killer
Sepsis is a complication caused by the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 250,000 people in the United States die from sepsis annually, according to the Sepsis Alliance. It is the most common cause of death among hospitalized patients in the U.S. The Global Sepsis Alliance estimates that eight million people die worldwide as a result of sepsis each year.

Vitamin C in its salt or acid form is not known to be an antimicrobial. There are articles at the end of the link that show the vit C treatment does NOT work.

I am amazed someone tried something that will not make big money for Big Pharma.

Get stuffed, troll.

How much does Big Pharma stand to make off of vitamin C?
