THAT’S the opening scene and when I started crying before the movie even began!!!!

I did the same when I went to Hollywood to see Yul Brynner in “The King and I” - at the end I was crying so hard I couldn’t even see him on the stage taking bows!!! I didn’t want it to end...Deborah Kerr “Shall we Dance”??? The best ever!!!!!

“A great movie, when they knew how to make movies with a story and characters...not too mention some great acting. “

Code Era Hollywood was also Golden Age Hollywood.

COOL! Those were great times! I did a bunch of shows there, all the shows were outside, it was Rock Valley College Starlight Theater.
I wish I could’ve stuck with it. I met some interesting people.
Maynard Ferguson
Bill Chase
Stan Kenton
Clark Terry

“”I played the trumpet also (NYS Allstate Band).””

I remember All State Band (played tenor sax) and also All State Chorus (”Oklahoma” was a favorite for performing) in NY state! That’s going back some for me - like the late ‘40’s or very early ‘50’s....

Sound of Music, The King and I, and Fiddler on the Roof, are my favorites.

When Fiddler came out in the theaters, my dad took his mom, who emigrated from a village in the Ukraine, and she said it was just like the village she left back home.

My grandmother was not Jewish. She was Ukie. But I guess she thought it was authentic enough.

Smart lady.

Always clear the area before bursting into song.

Saw it on Broadway in 1961.

Also saw Camelot with Richard Burton that week.

Weirdly but having rules results in better art.

You would think it wouldn't. But you have to get creative and that creativity carries over to everything.

Not quite everyone. At least one person who actually knew the VonTrapps walked out of the theatre because the film reversed personalities—Maria was actually a battle-axe and the Captain a soft touch.

Creative license, and it worked. Lord of the Rings films made HUGE changes to many characters, and the story itself, in most cases for the better (such a Aragorn, who is 10x better than the book).

Absolutely !

Movies became easier to make when the Code collapsed, and they could just have lots of swearing and actresses parading around in the nude.

But they were not as good.

my girlfriend in 8th grade took me to this movie so long ago....remains a favorite..

so far this Christmas season we've watched Wizard of Oz a couple of times...maybe the best movie ever made...the original Grinch who stole Christmas, and the original Willy Wonka...got other favorites recorded so we'll get to see them too...

I have it very firmly second hand—it also resonates with Maria’s books, some of which I’ve read.

Will freepmail you with details.

My wife saw “The King and I” back in the ‘70s on Broadway, with Yul Brynner and Constance Towers. She said that even back then that ticket prices were reasonable: even as a college student on vacation, she could afford to see it.
$17$, and near the stage.
