Putin’s Warped Wartime Economy, as Seen Through a Carton of Eggs
Wall Street Journal MSN ^ | 1/18/2024 | Georgi Kantchev

For a microcosm of how the war in Ukraine has warped Russia’s economy, look no further than a carton of eggs.

The grocery staple has been in short supply in recent months and prices have skyrocketed, prompting Russians from Belgorod to Siberia to form lines reminiscent of Soviet times. President Vladimir Putin has publicly apologized, blaming the egg shock on the government. Last month, a poultry-farm boss known as “the Egg King” survived an assassination attempt shortly after authorities started investigating his farm due to high prices.

Behind the soaring price tag—up around 60% in December from a year earlier, according to data released Friday—is a convergence of factors symptomatic of the economy’s travails.

-snip-

After Putin pinned the egg-price shock on the government, saying it didn’t secure enough imports in time, authorities sprung into action. Russia boosted egg orders from Turkey, Belarus and Azerbaijan and removed import duties on the product. The Ministry of Economy didn’t respond to a request for further comment.

Authorities also launched antitrust investigations into egg and chicken producers, including the Tretyakovskaya poultry farm in the Voronezh region, owned by Gennady Shiryaev, the Egg King. On Dec. 27, after news of the probe became public, a shooter fired at least twice on Shiryaev’s Volkswagen SUV, though Shiryaev escaped unscathed. The Tretyakovskaya poultry farm didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, there has been no price increase for eggs here in the US. They’re still just as inexpensive as they were back in 2018.

Right?

Tough situation for the typical Russian pensioner trying to survive on less than $250 a month.

Another eggscruciatingly meaningless article about Russian poultry. Only a chicken crap disinfo tool would focus on this meaningless stuff and ignore things like a U.S. national debt that is 35 times the Russian’s.

They did and they are back down, same may happen there, only time will tell.
What are the reasons for the price spike and shortages there, is it diseased chickens or mismanagement or something else like chickens needed to feed the troops….
Who knows, but I find it interesting that when an issue rises in Russia, the first responses are “well it happens here too….”

As far as I know “we”‘don’t claim everything is fine, in fact paradise, like pro Kremlin sources often do

When reports of burst water lines and power outages one of the first replies is about number of Americans out of power, not why is this happening in paradise and why isn’t it being fixed, maybe there should be more criminal investigations here for outages, but in Russia it is always the first go to

I wonder what percent of that pension goes to eggs, and since eggs are used in a lot of products what does that do to their costs
Obviously we went through that here in the US, and the number of chickens killed due to disease was massive, but there must be even more massive numbers of chickens left as egg prices have come back down.

The stories of fake eggs from China and infected eggs from turkey and the like are fascinating as well

In general, what “superpower” has an average monthly salary of $750 a month and average monthly pension of $250 a month? It’s funny and sad at the same time.

No, there were way up where I am a few months ago but have come back down some. I guess Biden’s regime somehow got a subsidy or two into the big producers to game the economy numbers. LOTS of other staples are still way too high.

Not to worry........ Russians who have no way to cook eggs or save themselves from literally freezing to death don’t worry about the price.

Freeper Russophiles continue their war crime support mindless of the actual death by freezing of real Russians

20 years of Putinism has really brainwashed Russian serfs. It’s hard to explain their isolation and dystopia. You just have to visit and experience it.

Wasn’t hilarious that Kremlin propagandists showcased a German owned super market in Moscow to claim there was no egg shortage?

Yeah. The us saw a dozen eggs triple in cost due to just government incompetence. We are so superior to everyone else. Just ask Biden economics.
