OPINION: With state choking on oil industry pollution, 3 bills should become law (NM - not so, BARF alert)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | January 16, 2024 | Gail Evans and Ennedith Lopez

Posted on 01/19/2024 3:48:09 PM PST by CedarDave

As the catastrophic effects of the climate crisis have become tangible, daily realities to billions of people around the globe, here in New Mexico people are choking on oil and gas pollution — and our legislators have to act.

Over the past decade, fossil fuel extraction in our state has increased tenfold, making New Mexico the second-largest producer of crude oil and seventh-largest producer of fossil gas in the country. Not only has this worsened the suffering created by human-made climate change around the world and in New Mexico, it’s also caused an explosion in pollution that is making our residents sick and devastating our environment.

We’re calling on the governor and legislators to take three basic steps this legislative session. First, they should implement children’s health buffer zones across the state.

Today, more than 32,000 New Mexico children attend schools within 1 mile of unplugged oil and gas wells, and about 24,000 students have active oil and gas wells within a half-mile of their schools.

Establishing a 1-mile buffer between oil and gas sites and schools would significantly safeguard our children’s health. It’s the bare minimum that legislators can do.

Next they should require mandatory penalties and public notification when operators spill toxic liquid waste.

There are on average four spills per day at the 69,000 oil and gas wells across New Mexico. But because of our state’s lax regulatory environment when it comes to the fossil fuel industry, operators are never penalized for these spills. Nor do they have to notify nearby residents.

Lastly, legislators should prohibit the use of freshwater for fracking and require the industry to re-use its toxic liquid waste instead of draining our precious aquifers.

I will be posting legislative updates on these and other issues doing the 30-day session that began on Tuesday.

Gail Evans is a New Mexico-based attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. Ennedith Lopez is the Policy Lead for Youth United for Climate Crisis Action (YUCCA).

Lets look at the charges and the actual situation:

First, indeed there are producing oil and gas wells within a mile of schools, mainly in Hobbs, Eunice and Jal. However, these are not located in poor neighborhoods but around the city. They are fenced with sensors that detect any unusual incident. The article makes it seem that there are pools of oil and pollution all over the landscape. In fact, there were instances decades ago where spills and use of unlined "emergency" pits polluted groundwater requiring complicated and costly cleanups and impacted homeowners were relocated and compensated. These instances were well documented and have led to much more stringent requirements for production operations and the banning of open and unlined pits. Children are much more likely to be impacted by emissions from vehicles on neighboring streets then from current O&G operations.

The authors apparently haven't looked at spill reports submitted to the Oil Conservation Division. Yes spills will occur but failure to report and remediate them will bring agency action and fines under current rules including some updated in the past two years. And recently there have been heavy fines for air and fluid releases in the oil patch.

Finally, action is being taken to lessen use of fresh water in fracking operations. New methods of treatment and reuse of frack water is very much on front burner these days. Most all industry, government and environmental stakeholders agree that change is needed here.

Finally, those in Santa Fe love the fact that the O&G industry provides in excess of 40 percent of state revenues allowing the governor and the progressives that control the legislature to splurge billions on their favorite projects like education (NM 50 out of 50) without success (no vouchers for private schools) and money for pre-K and welfare while keeping taxes on businesses high. No rebates for the taxpayers.

Whoops, meant to post the update info in separate posts and not with the main article.

Quantify “Choking on oil and gas pollution “ for me? Lately the wordsmithing bureaucrats have been approving the invoices for lesser quality propaganda because they are on overtime rates with their contractors.

As the catastrophic effects of the climate crisis have become tangible, daily realities to billions of people around the globe,

Global warming is a scam to fool stupid people into giving away taxpayer money to people claiming they can "fix" the problem.

Even if it wasn't a fake issue, the dominant producers of C02 are China and India, and if the conversation isn't started by asking what can be done about China and India, the person talking about "global warming" isn't serious.

"New Mexico people are choking on oil and gas pollution"

Yep.

Running wild in the streets, "sick and devastated."

We have proof that can't be disputed!

My company is advising a large natural gas pipeline company on a carbon capture sequestration well. That is basically where they take the CO2 out of the natural gas before it gets to the end user and pump it into the ground. Based on the onerous regulations, you would have thought they were pumping nuclear waste. Money is no option with these people. And at the end of the day, we the taxpayers will pay them to pump the “poison” back into the ground. It makes me very sad.

Step one, scare them.

Step two, come to their rescue.

Step three, control them.

The authors are just posturing and emoting for show. If they were sincere, the would also demand the banning the use of all oil, natural gas, and coal in the state, including products made from those substances.

Until they renounce the use of all plastics and other synthetics in their own homes and offices, I simply laugh at their arrogant nonsense.

“fossil gas”

“Titan’s lower atmosphere is primarily composed of nitrogen (94.2%), methane (5.65%), and hydrogen (0.099%).”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Titan

Dinosaurs were also on Titan, a moon of Saturn, but they farted too much and died.

In recent years I have come to believe that much of this type of stuff is just a scam intended to enrich the scammers at the taxpayers expense.

I now think much of what the government does is to enrich scammers that have created a strong control over the government by bribing and influencing members of congress to give them special laws and policies.

China and India are the actual producers of C02 on this planet. If they were serious, they would be talking about China and India instead of the US.

Something tells me that’s probably not a good idea.
