Before he became a leading voice for conservative causes on Capitol Hill, U.S. Senator James Lankford spent more than a decade as the director of youth programming at the Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center, a sprawling campground about 80 miles south of Oklahoma City that attracts more than 50,000 campers in grades six through 12 each year.

In 2009, while Lankford worked at the camp, the family of a 13-year-old girl sued a 15-year-old boy who was alleged to have had sex with her at the camp. Lankford, who was not in Congress at the time, is not alleged to have had any direct knowledge of the alleged assault, has not been accused of any wrongdoing and was not a defendant in the lawsuit, which was settled for an undisclosed amount before it was scheduled to go to trial.
But in a 2010 deposition in the case, given a week after he was elected to his first term in the U.S. House, Lankford testified that he believed a 13-year-old could consent to sex.
“Yes, I think they can,” Lankford told Kenyatta Bethea, a lawyer for the girl’s family, according a 155-page transcript of the deposition obtained by The Associated Press.

“Conservatives” like this are probably the best we’re likely to get to run for office. Would you? Or anyone you know?
Anyone who wants to be in congress enough to actually run for the job is probably the last kind of person you really want there.

Can a 13-yr-old give consent? Probably not legally. Can a 15-yr-old?
Do I think a 15-yr-old should be in some legal jeopardy in this case if the girl did it willingly? Probably not.
If the boy was 13 and the girl was 15, would we be having this discussion?

13 and 15 gets into the Romeo and Juliet safe harbour recognized in some state laws. I don’t know about Oklahoma. It can get very tricky. Some middle school aged kids are quite well developed physically. There used to be a technical term — “Jail bait” — for girls in this situation. The term is probably now forbidden. I don’t recall a similar term for strapping young men of this age.
And then sitting in the adjacent seats in the classroom will be 8th graders who are still little kids.
I’m not defending or justifying it, but there is a big difference between the creepy 28 year old boyfriend and the boy who is two years older.

In 7th grade, two classmates of mine were having sex with each other behind the auditorium curtain.
I believe a 13yo can consent to all sorts of things. Sex, abortions, tattoos, robbery, murder, etc.
That doesn’t mean we let them and it also means that we hold people responsible who abuse 13yo children.
This is not the first case of alleged sexual assault at Falls Creek, a 400-acre campground nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains. The camp is owned by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, which is now called Oklahoma Baptists and is part of the SBC.
