When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Happy St Patrick's Day to all our Irish readers around the world. In honour of the magnificent double "Up yours!" the sons and daughters of Erin delivered to their political masters a week ago, we could hardly not have an appropriately Irish song. And, with the funeral of Brian Mulroney in Quebec scheduled for this coming weekend, we could hardly not have this particular Irish song. Here is the then Canadian Prime Minister with America's President Reagan at the so-called Shamrock Summit nineteen St Patrick's Days ago (the big number starts about four minutes in, with the President, PM and their ladies entering on the second chorus):

The Canadian press did not care for the above. The American media were more indulgent. And Mr Reagan's administration regarded it as an important milestone in returning US/Canadian relations to normal after the ever wider gulf of the Trudeau (père) years.

Did you know Mr Mulroney reprised the song for another president? Here he is giving the chops a workout live at Mar-a-Lago in the first month of the Trump Administration:

That's Canadian pop maestro David Foster, co-author of "After the Love Has Gone", "St Elmo's Fire", "Grown-Up Christmas List" et al, accompanying the former PM.

Another little snatch of melody:

-------

Irish eyes, Irish eyes!
Tender and true are those Irish eyes.

Fair the light That softly lies
In my colleen's dear Irish eyes.
