A Royal Republic?

Welcome to a brand new audio edition of The Mark Steyn Show, recorded live at sea before an audience of Mark Steyn Cruisers from around the world.

Today's episode brings together two of the Steyn Show's favourite guests - Conrad Black and Samantha Smith - to take the temperature of the new reign of Charles III a year-and-a-half since the death of his mother, and to consider the merits of monarchy versus republican alternatives. And Conrad's proposal for a somewhat paradoxical constitutional reform prompts a scornful response from Samantha.

If Charles III doesn’t end up like Charles I, he should consider it a good reign.

Britain has effectively been a ‘Royal Republic’ since 1760 when George III surrendered the revenues of the Crown Estate to Parliament in return for an annual stipend decided upon by Parliament.

That was the final nail in the coffin of Royal power, arguably it had already passed to Parliament in 1689 after the Glorious Revolution and the passing of the Bill of Rights, which bound the Monarch to Parliament.

The Crown has been a mere symbol for a very long time and subject to a quasi-republican Parliament.

You know what they say,

A good reign is one you can walk away from.
