Good question. I will watch for an explanation in the NY Times articles. There is a Metropolitan Fair piece every day for the duration, I believe.

Likely just decorative. The hexagram only became uniquely associated with Jews in the last hundred or so years. It shows up in some European cathedrals and other older or ancient decorative situations.
