i know most people here wont “get this”..but to the lucky ones that grew up near the Canadian border, we got to hear the great Canadian Hockey announcers. Danny Gallivan, Don Wittman.Ward Cornell. And now Bob Cole has passed away. Saturday Night watching HNIC was the best. End of an era...the guys today cant hold a match to these guys..they were the best.

Danny Gallivan was my favourite, but I know that Bob was liked by many others, so RIP.

Personally, I liked Foster Hewitt. “He shoots, he scores!”

End of an era

I don't know who Bob Cole was, but if there's anything good to come out of his passing, it's that Colera has come to an end.

Nasty stuff.

RIP, Bob.

have an iconic announcer for Pittsburgh Penguins games.

Mike Lange has a whole list of unique sayings, that has taken on a life of their own. I even have a tee shirt with them on.

Decoding The Epic Lines of Mike Lange

“It's A Hockey Night In Pittsburgh!” ... “Smiling Like A Butcher's Dog!” ...

“Scratch My Back With A Hacksaw!” ...

“Numero Soixante-Six” ...

“Shave My Face With A Rusty Razor” ...

“Let's Go Hunt A Moose On A Harley” ...

“He Beat Him Like A Rented Mule!” ...

“Buy Sam A Drink & Get His Dog One, Too!”

When his time comes, I'm certain that Pittsburgh will have a week of mourning, and all the players (even past players) will attend his services.

One story involving Foster concerns his relationship with kindly H Ballard after Ballard assumed majority ownership of the Leafs and Maple Leaf Gardens in late 1971. A few years later in about 1977, Ballard dropped Foster’s broadcasting company that did the Leafs’ radio coverage since the 1920s to go with a FM station in Toronto. At about that time as well, the kindly owner wanted to get rid of Foster’s “gondola” where Foster did the Leaf broadcasts for all of those many years, becoming synonymous with the Leafs in those years of greatness, to make way for corporate boxes. Despite requests from both the NHL and the Hockey Hall of Fame to donate the gondola to the museum, Ballard simply ordered Gardens workers to tear out the gondola and have it incinerated. Many connected with the league and Hall of Fame were naturally upset by Ballard’s move, even though he said it was no good anymore, etc.

However, this did not stop kindly Harold from taking a few old chairs and painting “Foster’s Chair” on them and selling them for one or two dollars a pop, telling unsuspecting people that that was the chair Foster sat in to do his broadcasts of Leaf games. Brian MacFarlane comments that he knew Foster very well and did not recall him using a specific chair.

Ol' Hap Ballard was such a sweetheart. When he died, and met his father, the father of lies, I'm sure he taught satan a few things!

Mean old bastard Ballard!

I believe he was HNIC’s voice when my Isles won their four straight Cups

Speaking of hockey, the way Mitch Marner and the rest of the Leafs are being raked over the coals after last night’s loss is absolutely amazing. I’ve never seen a vilification like this and the clips of the Leaf players yapping at each other and Marner’s reaction are unreal.

I am sure it was just an innocent oversight but... Foster Hewitt.
And as a teen in NYC and a devoted Rangers fan I would listen to Gallivan on CBM Montreal and Hewitt on CBL Toronto when Rangers played either on a Saturday night as no NY station did their games and Ch9 only did delayed tape. One issue I had and still have was the Canadian style of using the past tense in describing the action. Most American announcers like the great Win Elliot and Jim Gordon use the basketball style present tense. But I recognize the well deserved praise Hewitt and the others earned.

sadly, i never got to hear Foster Hewitt, but all agree he was the example they all followed. I personally thought the Canadian guys were so much better, although there were also great American anonncers as well...

i gotta say, the Toronto situation is simply astounding..i mean their last Cup was 1967..and not even close since. Toronto is a mecca for hockey and to go that long without a Championship..makes you just shake your head.
