Letter 1
Of all days
On Mother's Day, I opened up the paper to a full-page assault on my sense of decency. The page 3A Hudson Belk ad showed what I could only call a "hillbilly hussy" seductively showing her curves. This is a form of pornography that really makes me sick because whole families look at your newspaper.
Little kids look at this and say, "Wow, my mom doesn't look like that." Poor frumpy-looking mothers (like me) who contain a BIG heart, who endlessly pour out sacrifice and love for their family (as opposed to the outpouring of breasts from a skimpy swimsuit) ask, "Is this all that matters?"
I want Belk's to issue a public apology. The venue in which all could see this display also needs to realize that a newspaper should be worth more than just lining for the litterbox.

Letter 2
Poor lesson
On your page 3A on May 12 was an advertisement that contradicts your own representation as being a "teaching tool" for young students.
By accepting such ads, what is The N&O trying to teach?

The ad in question. Original was full newspaper page.
Ladies, I sympathize, but be glad it wasn't Ru Paul! As for the cosmetics company, what are they thinking of? This girl needs more than cosmetics.
Belk's issue an apology? That'll happen, sure. And the first writer was correct. All the N&O is good for is litterbox lining
Any "little kids" who compare their moms to a model don't fit my definition of "little kids." The letter writer has issues of her own, and should leave her brats out of it.
