It's not easy to find picture of this volcano, which has been active for a couple of years. Clicking on the link in the title will provide a few more pictures.

I'm a dope; I forgot to mention that this is Volcano Tungurahua, in Ecuador. You can figure that out by going to the Web site, but I thought I should tell people!

Wow, how far away is the town? There are some good pics here, and that is as close as I want to be to an active volcano. Thanks for the post.

I would guess that the picture was taken from Ambato, which is the fourth-largest city in Ecuador, 25 km (15 miles) away from Tungurahua. There are some villages closer to it according to the Web site below, and apparently the government has basically had to say "live and let die" to anyone that still wants to live there. The volcano has been threatening for a long time, but hasn't exploded with a deadly eruption yet.

Tungurahua

Yep, If you are in that town when the volcano blows, just bend over and kiss it goodbye.

It'll already be gone before you get your lips in position. Nuee ardentes travel really, really fast.

Was it Pliny (the Elder?) who hiked up Vesuvius during a lull in an eruption, only the get caught as it became reactive?
