The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Guess what I saw over the weekend?

I saw a movie being played on I think the Hallmark channel from 1993.

It starred Jason Robards and a very young Elijah Wood!

"Frodo" was Huck Finn! :^)

It was the 1993 version of Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huck Finn"

It seemed funny seeing Elijah as an 11 year old boy. (he was cute!)

Heh.... Check out "The Good Son" sometime. Elijah is in that too, and he is about 7.

He's also in one of my favorite movies of all time: "Avalon". It was made in 1990...so he was pretty little. Did a good job!

Thanks, Will do! :^)

BTW, wasn't Elijah one of the two little boys in that movie about these two brothers that lived with thier mother when the mother remmarried and the stepfather abused the younger brother, so he and his older brother built a plane were the younger brother escaped. I forgot the name of the movie.

I saw that movie when it first came out. I need to see it again and see if I recognize Elijah.

And I'm pissed off at the mediots for making it sound like we're losing

I think they are trying to compare this action to Gulf War I, in which we got the ground part done in 100 hrs. But they seem to forget that the military was able to do that because of the 30 day pounding the country had already gotten from the air war. We didn't have that this time around, so things are very different. It's a good thing that these journalists with their 'have to have it done immediately' attitudes were't on Omaha Beach. They would have declared defeat for the Allies before the first day was done!

Another point that isn't being made is that in Gulf War I, we didn't even cross the Euphrates River. We were stopped by the UN who said, "That's enough"! We're not being hog-tied by the UN this time, so it is a whole new ball game! We're likely to encounter very strong resistance as we reach Baghdad, unless we can get some definite proof that Sadaam is dead, which I think is the case. If he's gone, folks won't be worried that they'll be punished for giving up and not getting killed for this regime.

he said that since the beginning of the war he got down on bended knee to pray for them, and that he's still praying for them and for a victory, and that he hopes for their safe return.

Sean Astin is just a classy guy! Too bad about Andy Serkis, but what can you say?

Niner is a little high maintenance, in the way all youngon's are, he runs around nonstop and plays with everything and wants attention and stuff! Bah!

Kind of like having a toddler in the house after being used to having teenagers.

That was a good adaptation! Elijah was very good in it. Didn't he play in the movie "Radio Flyer" as the younger of the two abused sons? I'll have to check that one out.

I think you're right. And in 1991 we were all so awestruck over the concept of the Patriot missile. Now we think we know all about warfare. Although there have been horrific incidents, it's been 30 years since most of America was exposed to the realities of war. The President said from day one (9/12/01) that this would take a long time. He was right.

Our objective is different this time. In 1991, we just wanted to get Saddam out of Kuwait. This time we want to get him out. Period.

It's like that barbeque scene in Gone With the Wind when all the young men rush off to the glorious war. They had no idea what they were in for. I think our military knew this time. I think our President knew.

It's the sheeple who are clueless. War sucks. War stinks. But sometimes it's the only choice. This is one of those times.

(Rush just said somebody hacked into the Al-Jazeera website. Anybody else hearing this?)

And in 1991 we were all so awestruck over the concept of the Patriot missile.

Just read in Investor's Business Daily that Undersecretary of Defense Edward Aldridge says we can have a missle defense shield up by the end of next year and that it would be 90% effective.
