Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We kept the original synthesized voice on our machine. By now most of our regular callers know its us but others don't know what to make of it.

Tolkien had a great grasp of the power of good and evil. I was watching the news today, and said to myself, "self, this looks like something I've already read about".

However, I can't equate Saddam and his army of orcs to be the equal of Sauron and his minions. While equals in evil, Saddam's gang is far more cowardly and ineffectual. The only "bravery" we've seen is the equivalent of "suicide by cop".

However, I'm getting pissed off by the continuing references to "elite republican guards". When we're through with them, will we have to fight the super-elite SPECIAL republican guard?

I just found out A&E is showing two "Horatio Hornblower" movies tomorrow, at 2 and 4. Guess what we're doing?

Those films have almost as many handsome men as LotR - and generally better-groomed!

wonderful historical fiction...a great read. I read them about once a year.

I have read most of the Hornblower books, yes. I do like that era! And they somehow feel like science fiction to me. I'm not sure why.

Evening all. Sorry I'm late. And I won't be on long. Wife is going to transfer her files to disk so I can set up the new system tomorrow.

Lessee...what did we do today?

Went to the gym, then came back and picked up the Mrs. and Luke. We took her to the doctor to get an antibiotic for her sinus infection. Luke and I went to get the disk we need to set up the cable on the other computer, came back, went to a couple of worthless yard sales.

Don't want other peoples junk. We're looking for sturdy dining chairs that I can paint. The ones we use now from Ikea are crap, but the table is okay. I'm gonna put some sort of funky finish on them. We've decided that we know we're not the Ethan Allen type, so why not be who we are. Lots of color and "interesting" things.

Thought it was gonna rain all day, but it had stopped by the time we stopped by Lowes. I bought more mulch and some ornamental grass. Set out the following plants today:

4 mums
9 sets of ornamental grass
1 rosemary bush
1 rhododendron
wildflowers.

I'm pooped!

But I gotta go. See y'all tomorrow unless I really mess up the new system and have to wait to see you Monday.

Don't know who might have seen this the other night, but this is a must-listen. This guy takes on the anti-war protesters, Peter Arnett, Dixie Chicks, Michael Moore, and even global warming. Just a slight language warning, but it's good stuff. I busted a gut laughing.

Good Morning, Master Dwarf.

We had some scattered rain yesterday so I didn't get everything done. I did get some of the garden tilled with my little 20-lb Mantis. Brother wants to get in on this gardening deal and is going to rent a real tiller to do the rest. I thought I'd do the bit around the herbs and he verbena so he wouldn't till them under.
