The Smokey Backroom vs General Interest?

So what is the difference between the General Interest section and The Smokey Backroom section of the FR? Has The Smokey Backroom section been established because the General Interest section has sort of turned into the Hobbit section? I just want to know so I know what sort of stuff to post in The Smokey Backroom section.

I can't remember when it was started but it was started for the more heated debates that go on here.

I think most people don't usually post things to the smokey backroom. It's a place the moderators move threads that get too heated and usually degenerate into name calling and other stupidity. It was started several months ago.

General interest is for topics that are of interest to Freepers, but aren't necessarily about news or politics.

Flame wars! I love to read heated exchanges! I think I'll check The Smokey Background out more often. Maybe the name of that section should be changed to "Flame Wars."

I try to avoid posting in General Interest. What's the point? Folks there are only interested in Hobbits. I still can't believe that the Hobbit fascination hasn't flagged a bit. I think it all started with a thread about some guy living in a Hobbit hole. Who could predict that simple thread would turn into a major cult? Some Freepers who used to post on News Activism now have become Hobbit cultists. I mention no names....Ruthie.

LOL! It may have started about Hobbits and Tolkien, but now it's just a group of friends that get each other through each day. We do talk about LOTR all the time though, especially since ROTK will be out in December at long last! :)
