Pet dog is savaged by terriers A dog owner told today of his ordeal after he watched helplessly as two pit bull terriers savaged his border collie. Disabled Cyril Pountney's dog Patch, aged 10, had emergency surgery and was put on a drip after the attack. Now the angry 58-year-old is calling for action to be taken against the owners of the dogs following the incident in Prouds Lane, Bilston. He said: "I was walking Patch over what used to be the old golf course when these two dogs came straight out from behind a fallen tree. "They dived on Patch and one got his neck and the other got his tail and they just kept biting him. A furious Mr Poutney continued: "I broke a stick off the tree and I was hitting the dogs but they would just not let go. "It was going on for five minutes. "I got Patch in my arms but they kept coming back. I was shaking." A neighbour who spotted the attack ran to call the emergency services but she was told police officers were unable to act. She also tried to get the city council dog warden but was told the official was in court all day. The dog attack happened at 1.40 last Thursday afternoon. Mr Pountney added: "Police said they could do nothing but it happened at 1.40pm and schoolchildren would be walking across that field later. "Something ought to be done about these dogs," he said. "If it can happen once then it can happen again. They ought to have muzzles on." The two dogs were believed to be pit bull terriers, one of which had a collar with three rows of metal studs. Patch was taken to the Carmel Veterinary Centre in Fallings Park, Wolverhampton. The injured pet had to have surgery straight away. He then had to be kept in overnight at the vet's. Staff said the dog could have died without prompt treatment. Now, fortunately, Patch is on the road to recovery at Mr Pountney's home in Oaklands Green, Stow-lawn, Bilston.
