Governor Jennifer Granholm (D)

Don't blame me. I voted for Posthumus. At least Jenny has to deal with a GOP state house and state senate.

I discovered an error.

Florida has 18 Republican Congressmen and 7 rats, not 19/6.

You are correct. Sorry, I must have counted wrong. I tried my best to double-check, but thanks for the correction.

It's interesting (at least I think) to categorize each of the 50 states into groups. These groups being how each state is divided politically between the two major parties.

The first group is comprised of Republican-only states. All of these states have Republican governors, and are represented in Congress exclusively by Republicans; and finally, all of these states voted for George W. Bush in the 2000 general election.

REPUBLICAN-ONLY STATES

Alaska
Idaho
New Hampshire

The next group is comprised of Republican-dominated states. In each of these states, the governor, both senators, and a strong majority of congressmen are Republicans. Also, each of these states voted for George W. Bush in the 2000 general election.

REPUBLICAN-DOMINATED STATES

Alabama
Colorado
Georgia *
Ohio
Utah

* Georgia is included, even though it has a Democrat Senator (Zell Miller), because of that senator's more traditionally Republican voting record, and the extremely strong likelihood of a Republican being elected as Senator in 2004 following Miller's retiring.

The next group is comprised of Democrat-dominated states. These states have a Democrat governor, two Democrat Senators, a majority of Democrat Congressmen, and voted for Al Gore in the 2000 general election.

DEMOCRAT-DOMINATED STATES

New Jersey
Washington
Wisconsin *

* Wisconsin is listed here, even though it has an even split (4-4) of Democrat and Republican Congressmen, because it is otherwise solidly Democrat.

The next group is comprised of Democrat-governor Republican-dominated states. In each of these states, both Senators are Republicans, a majority of Congressmen are Republican, and each state voted for George W. Bush in the 2000 general election. In spite of all this, each of the listed states has a Democrat governor.

DEMOCRAT-GOVERNOR REPUBLICAN-DOMINATED STATES

Arizona
Kansas
Kentucky
Missouri
Oklahoma
Virginia
Wyoming

The next group is comprised of Democrat-Congress / Republican-executive states. This wordy title is for the group of states who have Democrat Senators and a strong majority of Democrat congressmen, but voted in a Republican governor and a Republican for president.

DEMOCRAT-CONGRESS / REPUBLICAN-EXECUTIVE STATES

Arkansas

The next group is the reverse, and is comprised of Republican-Congress / Democrat-executive states. In each of these states, there are 2 Republican senators and a majority of Republican Congressmen; however, these states also voted Democrat for governor and for president.

REPUBLICAN-CONGRESS / DEMOCRAT-EXECUTIVE STATES

Pennsylvania

The next group is comprised of Republican-governor Democrat-dominated states. These states have Democrat senators, a majority of Democrat Congressmen, and voted for Al Gore in the 2000 general election. In spite of all this, they have a Republican governor.

REPUBLICAN-GOVERNOR DEMOCRAT-DOMINATED STATES

California
Hawaii
Maryland
Massachusetts
New York

The next group of states is comprised of Democrat-dominated states, except Congressmen. These group of states are Democrat dominated in their choices for governor, senators, and the president; however, they are Republican in their choice for representation in the House of Representatives.

DEMOCRAT-DOMINATED STATES, EXCEPT CONGRESSMEN

Delaware

The next group of states is comprised of Split states. These states defy categorization, and have a roughly even split of party division in their election of governor, senators, congressmen, and president.

SPLIT STATES

Connecticut
Florida
Illinois *
Indiana
Iowa
Louisiana
Maine #
Michigan ^
Minnesota
Mississippi
Montana $
Nebraska $
Nevada $
New Mexico
North Carolina
North Dakota
Oregon $
Rhode Island
South Carolina $
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas !
Vermont
West Virginia @

* Illinois fits best into this category, but it tends to trend more Democrat, and may lose its Republican senator in 2004.

# Maine is included in this category; however, its only Republicans in this list are Senators, who both have a fairly liberal voting record.

^ Michigan trends more Democrat, but it has a 9-to-6 majority of Republican congressmen.

$ Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, and South Carolina are listed here only because they have a Democrat / Republican split in the Senate.

! Texas is listed here only because of its slight majority of Democrat congressmen.

@ West Virginia is listed here only because of its vote for George W. Bush in the 2000 general election.
