Kentucky 6th District Special Election

Posted on 01/26/2004 8:53:28 PM PST by MplsSteve

Has anyone heard any polling info about the special election to replace fill Ernie Fletcher's old Congressional seat?

Who's leading? Alice Forgy Kerr or Ben Chandler?

Anyone with any news on this race?

I read that GWB is not going into the District to campaign for Kerr. What gives? We can't lose that district or the at-large district in SD. Both of these races will be really tough.

I'm more worried about SD than Kentucky.

But why Bush isn't visiting is a mystery to me. Losing this seat to Chandler would be a major embarrasment.

According to a SurveyUSA poll, Chandler is ahead 50%-46% among "likely voters" and 54%-44% among "certain voters." Those numbers are screwy, partly because they only leave 2%-4% undecided. In any event, Kerr does not appear to be doing too poorly considering the fact that Chandler has 100% name ID and Kerr really hasn't started campaigning yet.

Chandler will probably win. Sorry.

Per the Louisville Courier-Journal both Bush and Cheney have decided not to visit the district in support of the candidate.
I think that McConnell will see that she has enough money for the campaign but it would be nice to have a celebrity guest appearance to boost visibility and excite the troops.

I'd give the edge to Chandler, but polling doesn't mean much in a special election, it's all about getting your voters out. I don't know why anybody would say "we can't afford to lose" this seat or any other though. We have a 229-205-1 majority in the House and we're going to pick up at least 6-10 seats in November so it really isn't that crucial.

My understanding is that Ben Chandler is leading, though the margin is debateable. He has far, far greater name I.D., and the 6th. distrcit is not heavily Republican. The Survey U.S.A. poll shows Chandler leading Alice Forgy Kerr by 54% to 44% among voters who have definitely made up their minds. An article in U.S.A. Today mentions that the 'Rats are "confident" that they will win the race. Also, the Kerr campaign cannot afford the enourmous security costs of having Bush campaign there. (Why the state party doesn't chip in is a valid question). Kerr does have more money, but this race seems to be tilting towards a 'Rat pick-up.

We can't afford to give the RATS an inch. If Ben Chandler wins the KY-06, he could use it as a springboard to run for Senator or Governor in the future.

It's a tossup, depends on turnout.

In 2002 they were confident they'd win back the House, hold the Senate, beat Jeb, etc etc etc. Blowing smoke.

I beg your pardon...Bush has so many things to deal with right now he needs a little slack. I feel certain he would come help if it was at all possible. It seems to me that he helps in so many places. Hope you get a win there!
