Current Delegate Chris Wakim, R-Ohio, made it public Saturday night that he is a candidate for Congress.
Those attending an Ohio County Republican Party steak fry at the Civics Club in Elm Grove were greeted by "Wakim for Congress" signs, and flyers were passed out promoting an upcoming Wakim campaign event.

Alan Mollohan hasn't had a serious challenge in decades. And when he has been seriously challenged, his margins haven't been impressive. This one could be interesting.

Roughly speaking, West Virginia is economically liberal and socially very conservative.

Sounds good, and don't forget the other West Virginia Conservative Gulf War vet running for Senate,
HIRAM LEWIS 2006
To: smoothsailing
Good point. Hiram Lewis was almost elected state AG last year. It's a mistake to rule him out.

It's a mistake to rule him out.Absolutely, particularly now that Caputo has said she's not interested. Hiram's fundraising has picked up considerably since her decision. He shouldn't have much trouble in the primary.
IF the RNC would just get off it's duff and get on board with Hiram, he'll give that 'ole coot Byrd a fit.

After being stuck in the doldrums since Watergate, when the party was growing towards parity, the GOP is growing back again in WV as the populace has finally woke up to the fact that their 'Rats aren't reflecting their values. Al Gore was probably the one that gave them that hard slap across the face in 2000, and it wasn't pretty (for him, that is).

"IF the RNC would just get off it's duff and get on board with Hiram, he'll give that 'ole coot Byrd a fit."
I think Hiram Lewis might just beat Byrd, whose voting record is way too liberal for WV and who appears to be either senile or fast approaching it. I would have preferred Betty Ireland to run, but Lewis may actually have a better chance in the general election than the much-ballyhooed Shelley Moore Capito (who is pro-choice on abortion, and thus wouldn't be able to motivate WV's pro-life majority to come out in hordes and take Byrd out).
If you go to my blog,
http://auh2orepublican.blogspot.com/, and search for "Byrd," you'll find what I think about the GOP's chances in the WV Senate race.

"Alan Mollohan hasn't had a serious challenge in decades."
True, but his voting record is quite conservative, especially on social issues. He'll be very hard to dislodge, even in a district that has become quite Republican in presidential elections. I'd save our gunpowder for Robert Byrd's Senate seat, where Hiram Lewis could post a strong challenge.

Very true. And I would add, very patriotic and anti-free-trade.

Mollohan got 68% in 2004, and had no opposition in 2002.
