Wyoming Races: Gov. Freudenthal (D) Strong, Rep. Cubin (R) 'Vulnerable'
Casper Star-Tribune ^ | February 7, 2006 | Chad Baldwin

A self-described "ultra-conservative," Kathleen Meade of Cheyenne didn't vote for Democratic Gov. Dave Freudenthal in 2002. But if the 2006 election were held today, he would get her vote.

"I really do not fault a majority of what he has done," said Meade, 74, a retired teacher. "I think he's sincere. I don't have negative thoughts against him."

When it comes to Republican U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin, however, Meade speaks more critically.

"There are some things I've been disappointed with," the longtime Cheyenne resident said. "At this point, it seems that she mostly does what the Republicans in Washington want her to do."

According to a new Casper Star-Tribune poll, Meade isn't the only registered Republican who feels that way. Eighty-one percent of Wyoming voters surveyed -- including 78 percent of Republicans -- rated Freudenthal's performance as "excellent" or "good." Cubin's performance was described as "fair" or "poor" by 53 percent of those polled -- including 38 percent of the Republicans surveyed.

I don't think that Barbara Cubin is in particular danger of losing the general election. However, she would be highly vulnerable in a Republican primary against one well-known opponent.

Congresswoman Barbara Cubin has never had the political security of Wyoming's two U.S. Senators.

That's quite an interesting comment from a self-described "Ultra-Conservative".....especially since Cubin has a 97 lifetime rating from ACU.....

I'm not sure, but I think that Republicans were unable to unite after the primary.

Also, Freudenthal had name I.D. from his days as U.S. Attorney for Wyoming.

I was suprised to learn that Wyoming is not a right to work state, it has a lot of unionized miners IIRC. IOW it's closer to Minnesota than it is to Montana.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Interesting since Wyoming is one of the states I am considering moving to in the near future

Most of the Union voters are in the Southern Tier of the state.

But the case is that Barbara Cubin has never been all that popular in Wyoming.

I've never understood what it is that has engendered ill-will towards Barbara Cubin. I've seen nothing objectionable towards her voting record whatsoever.

As for Freudenthal, the greatest worry I have is a potential future run for the Senate. We cannot afford to be sending a Democrat from Wyoming (the last one elected was Gale McGee in his 3rd and final term in 1970).

I'm not certain. I know that she was controversial while in the state legislature.

Well, talk to some locals, they'll know more than I do. I'm just a political observer several time zones away from the great state of Wyoming.

She seens to have an abrasive personality. Former Senator Malcolm Wallop was never particularly popular for the same reason.

IMHO, the biggest possible threat to Cubin's tenure would be if term-limited state Treasurer Cynthia Loomis were to challenge her in the GOP primary.

All these new comers moving in bother me. I ran into some young punks from California the other night. All they did was tell me how much better the socialist programs in California were compared to Idaho.

That's why a democrat can win in Wyoming.

They lumped the fair in with the poor?

Heck I rate my congressman as poor and I'll be voting for his sorry RINO hide again this November, and I wouldn't cross the street to spit on him.

I've heard the "abrasive" charge. I never understood it in Malcolm Wallop's case. I saw a speech he gave once on C-Span in the late '90s and he had practically the entire audience on its feet clamoring to have him run for President. Alan Simpson could often get ornery, though, and he was a bit of a RINO.

I wouldn't panic too much, yet. Since 1974, Jim Geringer was the only GOP Governor (1995-2003). I think the people like to elect a Democrat to counterbalance the GOP legislature (which, to my knowledge, has never once gone Democrat since statehood), sort of like a Massachusetts in reverse.

I know this is a house race and Cubin will almost certainly win, but why is it almost every senator up for reelection seems to be a republican? What's the deal?

Thomas is 100% secure though.
