Assuming, as the polls seem to have concluded, that Bobby Jindal will soon be moving to Baton Rouge, we're going to be in for at least one fascinating contest to fill his 1st Congressional District seat.
Gov. Jindal would call the special election, likely in the spring, and the winner would have to run again in the regular election next fall.
Four established politicians, two from the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and two from the north shore, already are weighing the race. Any combination would constitute the first seriously contested campaign in the 1st District since 1999. And lurking in the background with enough appeal to blow the others out of the water is a fifth potential candidate who so far has resisted entreaties to run.
All five are Republicans. The chances of a Democrat taking the seat for the first time in three decades are nil, as voter registration in today's 1st is only 39 percent Democratic.
But the north-south split is of paramount importance. When Bob Livingston resigned the seat eight years ago, the runoff to succeed him came down to David Vitter of Metairie and Dave Treen of Mandeville.
Don't let Treen's mailing address fool you, however, for these were both south shore candidates. Treen's long political history took root, grew and reached full blossom in Metairie, and he worked for a south shore law firm after leaving the Governor's Mansion in 1984 and moving to Mandeville.
Vitter's triumph made sense in 1999, as the south shore commanded a slight majority of the 1st District's registered voters.
That's no longer the case.
Hurricane Katrina swept voters by the score from 1st District neighborhoods in East Jefferson, West Jefferson and New Orleans. These days, the south shore represents only 44 percent of the district's voter registration.

The most-named potential candidates include Jefferson Parish Councilman at-large Tom Capella , St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis, Slidell Mayor Ben Morris, state Representative Steven Scalaise, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten, and Jefferson Parish Councilman John Young, all Republicans. I’m surprised that Suzanne Haik Terrell wasn’t mentioned. I guess she isn’t interested.
Now, if he would only change his name to Bobby Jindeaux. :)

I have to go with Scalise. He’s the real deal and has a gold-plated track record in the Louisiana House.
We hold the La-01 with little difficulty. I just hope David Duke doesn’t run again to make the GOP look bad.

Very true. Politically, the voters now see David Duke for the ridiculous cretin that he is.
Since this is a safe Republican district, local conservatives should “go the whole hog” and pick the most pro-border security, pro-national sovereignty conservative that is in the running. No need to settle for a RINO in this case.
Since David Duke also opposed the Iraqi War from the get-go, he would be welcomed in the RAT party. Duke is sure to get the Cindy McKinney and Jim Webb vote.
That goes without saying. ;-)
What are the implications of Duke’s convictions for mail fraud and tax evasion?..... convicted felon?.... How would that fit into being elected to congress?......
