(Maryland) Session sets up some for future stardom
The Gaithersburg Gazette ^ | April 24, 2009 | Sean R. Sedam and Alan Brody

Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio (R-Dist. 37B) of Newcomb

At just 31 years old, Haddaway-Riccio has long been considered one of the GOP's rising stars.

Some see her as an ideal candidate for the 1st Congressional District. She's the daughter of an Eastern Shore waterman, boasts a strong environmental record, owns a graphic design company and is a fiscal conservative who has strong crossover appeal.

Her composed presence within the GOP caucus and her strong debating skills on the House floor have earned kudos. She also has won plaudits for her advocacy of women's issues and her promotion of rural broadband.

"Jeannie's potential is unlimited in the caucus," Shank said. "Jeannie's star is uneclipsed. She can go as far as she wants to go."

I don’t know a great deal about this legislator and perhaps future Congresswoman. But her name has been getting circulation in Maryland.

She was first appointed to office in 2003 by Governor Bob Ehrlich to replace Kenneth D. Schisler who was appointed as the Chair of the Maryland Public Service Commission.

As much as I like Andy Harris perhaps she is the best answer to taking back CD-1.

“She also has won plaudits for her advocacy of women’s issues”

If that’s code language for “pro-abortion,” then we can surely do better in the MD-01. It is an overwhelmingly Republican district, and even the Democrats in the Eastern Shore tend to be pro-life.

We need a conservative from the Eastern Shore to run. Harris was a fine candidate, but hailed from the “wrong” part of the district (costing him votes in the parochial EC).

That was my worry, too. It did sound like code language for being a pro-abort. Andy Harris got clusterf**ked out of winning that race by a scumbag Specteresque RINO loser, he deserves the honor of getting it this time around.

Just did a quick check and this website confirms she is not pro-abort:

I was concerned about that. It’s a relief to read.

As a general rule, one should not rely solely on how a pro-abortion group characterizes a politician’s abortion position. I find it hard to believe that not a single Republican in the MD legislature is “pro-choice” on abortion, as the group claims. So I’d like to find out a bit more about her before calling her pro-life.

It bothers me to see good Republicans from the “wrong part” of a district like Andy Harris or the guy who ran in the Mississippi special lose votes due to silly regional sentiments.

But ideally to maximize chances at victory in this MD seat our nominee should be from the shore.

I’m sure someone will find some reason to hate some position associated (no matter how thinly) to her thus causing a ideological jihad to throw her under the bus, the Metro or the ICC.

An irrelevant aside but I hate hyphenated names. Ladies should either keep their maiden name or use their husbands.

Women's issues = code word for abortion.

Sorry, she won't get any of my money unless that is UTTERLY repudiated.

The thing is, we don’t think that rule applies in this case (please check Posting #8). She has been active in women’s employment issues, so it doesn’t mean she’s pro-abortion.

She apparently has also been appointed as the 2nd vice president of the md legislative women's caucus (which has both "D" and "R" in it).

That, in a dark blue state like MD, is not a good sign (IMHO).

Having said that, she could simply put that up on her website as a position. One way or the other. But, in MD, in the absence of something concrete, my assumption is going to be...what it is right now.

That’s understandable. However, I don’t think that she would have been mentioned in the article in such a way if she were pro-abort.

Yeah, and I’m also not calling her a liar (as I would if she were a Dhim)

Easiest thing: ask her — and ask her to write a little blog entry about it (maybe she could talk aboout the Notre Dame scandal...thus addressing the subject indirectly). Or ask her to speak at the next Maryland March for Life. In other words, to declare in a public, accessible fashion.

Alternatively, I don’t know if there have been any votes on “life” type issues since she’s been in office. (MD is so liberal, I don’t know what else could be voted on here...other than legalizing retroactive abortions) But if there have been, please let me know and I can look up her votes on the subject.

But I’m not going to assume on the subject. And I don’t want to deal with a Romney-like “I was pro-choice before I was pro-life”
