Why doesn't Mike Huckabee get any respect? [Miss Rubin explains Gomer's lack of viability]
The Washington Post's Right Turn ^ | December 6, 2010 | Jennifer Rubin

Mike Huckabee puts on his best Rodney Dangerfied routine, whining to Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin that no one shows him any respect as a 2012 contender:

"I just don't understand how it is that a person can read these polls day after day and the narrative is constantly everybody but me," he told POLITICO. "Whether I do it or not, the fact is that if one looks at the overall body of information that's available, nobody would be in a better position to take it all the way to November."

There are a few good reasons for this. Most important, he has a rather cheesy show on Fox News, so it's a bit hard to imagine him giving that up and stepping back into the political ring. Ah, but Sarah Palin has a show with bears and canoes, so why is breezy TV fare a barrier to a political career? Well, it may be, in part for Palin. And Huckabee is no Palin when it comes to juicing up the base.

Moreover, Huckabee never showed much appeal beyond a specific segment of voters -- evangelical Christians. They are an important constituency within the GOP primary electorate, but you have to win more than just those voters to get the nomination; Huckabee never did....

Despite what you East Coast elitists think, the nomination is hers to turn down or accept, as of right now. Don't think so? Google "Palin" sometime. The only person in the world with more results currently sits in the White House.

Yea, but Mike plays the guitar. Everybody loves a guy who plays the guitar.

Charming guy who is good at playing an instrument, grew up in a little town called Hope, and was governor of Arkansas. What could possibly go wrong?

Huckabee's show has the feel of an old Jim Baker re-run, without Tammy Faye, of course.

So, he plays the guitar...I play the guitar but I don't think that is my stepping stone to the presidency.

It's the kind of hometown-locally produced show you see on the "spare" channel of your local cable company.

Kinda like “Fernwood 2 Nite”

The show satirized real talk shows as well as the sort of fare one might expect from locally-produced, small-town, midwestern American television programming.

When I was younger, Co Springs hosted a conference of evangelical ministers from all over the nation and at the same time there was a conference held for Automobile salesmen. I couldn’t tell them apart - most of them had the poofie hair styles and that almost greasy personality.
Huckabee reminds me of those ministers. I want someone that is willing to speak the truth not compromise the truth just so people will like him.
I can’t sit through his show without wanting to throw up as I watch him being so nice to people like Michelle Obama without asking some tough questions.

Huck has two problems, in my opinion.

One, is that he on several occasions stated or implied that if you wanted the borders secured you were unchristian. I know he has tried recently to back away from that position, but that was his position back then and I have to assume its his true position.

His second problem is more recent. All he had to do was confront Obama aggressively over the last two years and he would be our leading candidate for president today. He preferred to be Mister Bipartisan Mildly Conservative. He has left it to people like Beck, Palin, and DeMint to do the heavy lifting and take all the artillery fire from the Left.

He isn’t a fighter. He is a genial, amiable talk show host. He is no Beck and he is no Palin. These are time that demand firebrands and firebreathers, and that isn’t Huck.

And therein is the clue to the clueless, and the clueless appears to be Huckabee.

Huckabee, you like Gingrich, may run, but neither of you will ever be elected.

He WANTS to be liked, and that is the problem.

Read again his Rodney Dangerfield-like statement 'I don't get no respect! [whine]'

"...the narrative is constantly anybody but meeeeee..."

Well, *uckabee, that's probably because you're a whiney, milquetoast wannabe socialist who hasn't found a Democrat yet you aren't willing to snuggle up to. How'd that work out for Juan McCain's presidential aspirations? Why don't you and Linsey go play "My Pretty Pony" and get off my TV? Between *uck and Whore-aldo, I can't even turn Fox News on over the weekends anymore.

I am sure he is a nice guy but.....he reminds me of an unctuous preacher and then he picks up his bass guitar while wearing a suit.....sorry - he is a no go.

Isn’t that where the guy Huckster pardoned shot some people a while back? I suspect not.

Heck even his major base, evangelicals, seem to be lining up behind Palin.

That’s peanuts alongside the then governor pardoning felons despite many warnings from corrections & judicial folks who went on to murder and commit other crimes once free. Unless you’re a PETA member or some such.
