I'm going out on a very short limb with a prediction for the new year: Sarah Palin will announce later in the coming year her intention to seek the GOP nomination for the presidency in 2012.
And, oh, how the talking heads will talk, for days on end, upstaging disasters natural and man-made. The world will watch in amazement as this femme of Facebook, this whiz of Twitter, this marionette of Murdoch who has become the Paris Hilton of politics famous for being famous and little more will hijack endless hours of broadcast media and spill the ink of an ocean of octopi, and thereby prove of the national media the lameness of which they are accused by the very object of their fascination.
It seems not a week goes by when on the editorial pages of my favorite newspapers like Palin, I read all of them a letter is published that derides "libruls" for their supposed "fear" of the ex-half-term-governor. Here's an excerpt pulled from one such letter:
"... the Sarahphobia pandemic that has unhinged so many liberals. I don't get it. What is it about this ditzy, attractive, conservative female that strikes paralyzing fear in the hearts of educated liberal males and the left-stream media, compelling them to attack the hapless woman like pit bulls on a Chihuahua?"
As an educated liberal-ish male, I have since gotten to wondering: Is this writer right? Has my heart been stilled by mortal terror by this woman so humorously referred to by the conservative British magazine The Economist as "Boob bait for Bubba"? Have I taken to kicking while she's down this wretched victim of Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson and Garrison Keillor?
Does Sarah strike paralyzing fear in my heart? You betcha'.
Now, am I scared of Palin personally? No. She's a great performer and can sometimes be almost charming in a girl-next-door sort of way. Almost. Her wild syntax, folksy colloquialisms and strings of clichés remind me of any number of eccentric neighbors and older relatives when I hear them, too, talk of politics. And these people have caused me no cardiac arrest.
But I am scared of her incompetence, her ignorance and her narcissistic oblivion to both. She not only doesn't know, she doesn't know she doesn't know. As president pray to whatever deity you wish, supernatural or spaghetti-based, to forbid that event from happening she would surround herself with those who will indeed know she doesn't know, anything, and who themselves will know quite adeptly how to take advantage of her, and, by extension, us.
It is of these sycophants and schemers that I am afraid. It is the knowing that the GOP is full of such people who would swarm to Sarah like black flies to moose that "strikes paralyzing fear" in my heart.
Sarah Palin herself is utterly vacuous there really is no "there" there. She is without a stitch of credibility or bona fides on any critical subject. She knows most how to be a mom and my guess is that she's a good one and beyond that she knows most where the cameras are.
She remains a newsmaker despite her abrupt and bizarre resignation as Alaska governor only because reporters have adopted a new definition of newsmaker. As in: "A newsmaker is someone who is newsworthy because they're in the news a lot." Aside from being second banana on the losing side of a national election, what has Palin done to deserve anything approaching the level of attention she currently receives?
She gives speeches of no distinction. She would do well to remember the wise adage that says when you are thought of as a fool, it is better to remain silent than to speak and remove all doubt. She is erratic and uneven and unable to articulate a consistent core philosophy.
Bottom line, she is an example of a bad education, an incurious mind, an inflated self-esteem and a need for constant attention. But that's just it, I suppose. She is, in other words, a product of mainstream American culture.
And there's the rub. While she is the Justin Beiber of politics everyone outside her rabid fan base sees her for the slight and fleeting talent that she is her fans see her as a "normal" person, one of them, a self-made success. She speaks, thinks and acts like a "regular" person in modern, ill-educated America. Millions look at her and see a glamorized version of themselves: patriotic, religious, family-oriented, hard-scrabble, unfancy and "real".
Not to mention white and Christian.
Whatever you think of Sarah Palin, she deserves grudging praise for her canny knack and effortless skill in marketing herself as the personification of voter backlash against political and cultural "elites." Millions of ticked-off voters truly, madly, deeply feel that she is the only politician who "gets it," even though she is unable to articulate beyond vague and empty one-liners what "it" is.
This gun-toting, snowmobile-cruising, moose-hunting, college-skimming former beauty queen has become a cultural icon, little understood by anyone outside this particular culture. She has become so well-entrenched as the darling of the tea party ilk and soon the entire GOP that any criticism of her is perceived by her supporters as a pit bull attack on a "hapless" Chihuahua, and experienced by them as a personal attack on them.
Let's be clear, there are lots of honest, hard-working, salt-of-the-earth folks who support Palin. What terrifies me is neither them nor her.
What terrifies me is every kook and krazy with an anti-government, anti-intellectual, anti-immigrant and anti-abortion axe to grind who has grabbed on to the tail of her shooting star. Scarier still is that Palin lacks the wherewithal to recognize, much less slay, the demons she is unleashing.
The more they underestimate her the more resounding will be ZERO's defeat!
Another gay commie.
Like I said.
I choose the Fourth of July, 2011.
I choose the Fourth of July, 2011.
What will actually happen is that she will wake up one morning having seen a path to victory, and say, “I think I’ll call Bob & Mark this morning and tell them I’m running for President.” The media will go nuts. If she plans a date in advance, the word will get out and the effect will be lost.
He lives with his wife and two daughters. Not a gay blade. However, he does have a bias against Christians.
How about "President's Day" -- in February?
the guy missed a few insults..
doesn’t Ronald Reagan have a special day in February
“He lives with his wife and two daughters. Not a gay blade. However, he does have a bias against Christians.”
he may not be gay. But he probably has entertained the idea.
So many of us who volunteered to send a gaggle of Tea Partiers to DC now have our sea legs on how to do it within an organization.
I know I am ready to volunteer the minute she says go and their are hordes of us that will.
That is what has this author in a tizzy, that fact that we exist in "his" America. It isn't his, it is the Vision of the Founders, Reagan, Sarah and "Us"....

Answer to question 1: No talent GAY Oregonian liberal (see byline picture at top link). Answer to question 2: He’s unwittingly accomplished something — he’s pretty much accurately described the traits for Oberfuhrer Obama....
I was thinking along the same lines, his ‘wife’ is what used to be called the ‘catcher’ in gay circles.
