The best campaign ad of 2012 (Ronald Reagan on Haley Barbour)
Politico ^ | 020711 | Ben Smith

So it may not actually have been cut yet, but Haley Barbour's rivals will struggle to beat his repurposing of this direct-to-camera endorsement from his 1982 Senate race:

"I'd like to take a moment to talk with you about our country's future and a very special leader - Haley Barbour. The problems of the 1980's are rapidly changing and demanding new solutions and fresh vigorous ideas. I've learned first hand that Haley Barbour has the intelligence, courage and experience to make a great United States Senator. These are difficult times but slowly and surely we are making America prosperous again. With leaders like Haley Barbour we can look to the future with confidence and hope."

The endorser is President Ronald Reagan.

Not too many people running in 2012 will be able to get Reagan’s endorsement.

It might make a good campaign advertisement, but this supporter of amnesty is not going anywhere in 2012:

"So there's gotta be a way--a) we gotta secure the border, but b) we've got to work through how are we gonna make sure we've got the labor we need in the United States. H1B visas--a huge, huge thing. My idea is everybody from Stanford who's from India who gets a PhD, we oughtta stamp citizenship on his diploma"

"...common sense tells us we're not gonna take ten or twelve or fourteen million people and put them in jail and deport them. We're not gonna do it, and we need to quit--some of the people need to quit acting like we are, and let's talk about real solutions."

Barbour, to my knowledge, is the only powerful figure in the GOP trying to push the party leftward on immigration...

(Later, in the same article...). Y'all can keep him in Mississippi.

There is not one serious potential candidate (Sarah Palin included) who proposes deporting 10 to 14 million illegals. Not one.

Oh...and if your definitive source for political knowledge is The Atlantic, you have problems.

In that case, we need to keep looking. We have somewhere between 10% and 20% unemployment. States are on the verge of bankrupty. Deporting these illegals would go a long way towards solving both problems.

Correct. Palin’s position on immigration is not that different from Bush’s.

Interesting and good for him to have but not worth a huge amount in 2012, an endorsement from 1980. He’s got to make his case based on whether he lived up to that endorsement in the subsequent 3 decades.

Barbour stabbed Buchannan in the back when he (Barbour) was chairman of the RNC.

Neither will ever get my vote.

Make me director of Homeland Security for a year and I’ll solve the problem of illegal immigration in America.

It’s not whether there’s a way, it’s whether there is a will.

Democrats want illegals to stay, vote, and not work.

Rinocrats want illegals to stay, work, and not vote.

Patriots want them to get the heck out of our country so that Americans can get back to work.

I was unaware of this endorsement. That is awesome!

Barbour appeared on my radar as Katrina approached and I have been impressed ever since.

“There is not one serious potential candidate (Sarah Palin included) who proposes deporting 10 to 14 million illegals. Not one.”

You are absolutely correct. I’ve been giving this issue a LOT of thought and conservatives need to look at the practicalities of an AUTHENTICALLY just solution to this problem...in a way that makes our country stronger.

If we don’t....the Democrats will do something far worse.

And for good reason. It's untenable.

Should you find enough political will in DC to even attempt it, there will be plenty of judges who will put a halt to it the second some whiner shows up in court. And before that even, brace yourself for all of the trouble when a mistake is made (and mistakes will be made, as people are imperfect) and someone who is legally here is forcibly deported.

No, the "Arizona" approach is probably better. Strip away the reasons the illegals come and stay in the first place by denying them jobs and services, and they'll self-deport. Couple that with effective border security, and the problem will eventually take care of itself.
