Palin's Unpresidential Calendar (She's skipping NBC/Politico debate, as she should)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | John Fund

Posted on 03/08/2011 10:43:44 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Yesterday Sarah Palin sent another signal that she probably won't enter the 2012 presidential race when it was announced she would be doing an event in Denver on May 2—the same day as the first Republican presidential debate.

Ms. Palin has agreed to appear in suburban Lakewood at a "Tribute to the Troops with Sarah Palin," a fundraiser for the families of fallen soldiers in suburban Denver. John Andrews, a former GOP gubernatorial nominee who heads the Centennial Institute, says Ms. Palin will not accept a fee and all proceeds from the event will go to family members who have lost breadwinners in combat.

The political significance of her acceptance lies in the fact that the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is set to hold the first debate among presidential candidates on May 2, an event moderated by Brian Williams of NBC and John Harris of Politico.com....

That’s the right approach. Whenever you’re promoting or marketing a person or a product, you always want to speak to your supporters and potential supporters, and don’t waste your resources trying to convert your committed opponents. If you try to convert people who are strongly opposed to a person or product, you’ll waste a lot of energy as you only convert a few of them into supporters. In politics, you also drain off your energy in useless disputes with committed opponents when you try to speak to them and convert them. Instead, as you did, the right strategy is to speak only to your supporters and swing voters, and rally them for the highest possible turnout. Ignore committed opponents and only use them as material for jokes.

I don’t know if Sarah will run for president. It’s a toss-up if you ask me and while she probably wants to run, her decision will depend on how she thinks the campaign and presidency will affect her family.

This whole May 2 “debate” is an attempt to draw out the contenders too early so they can be savaged by the press, and Politico and NBC will just be the start of it.

I think staying away from it would be the smart move for any of the supposed “top tier” candidates. (Except Romney, for whom this is tailor-made to coronate, of course.)

In the years i’ve followed FR I can’t remember a more silly comment. Mrs Palin lending her name to a fund raising event for the military is an act of respect.

does it also mean those potential candidates who don’t go to THIS debate aren’t serious about running either?

“The self promoting publicity tours of Palin and Hannity under the guise of doing it for the charity case troops , demean the sacrifices of our military”.

That’s major BS. As someone who served, I can say that with a great deal of authority.

I agree with your analysis. It’s way too early for debates and the media is trying to draw our candidates into debates so they can start attacking them and distorting their statements on the issues. Our candidates should get together and decide as a group not to participate in any debates until November at the earliest. They can just say that it’s too early and they don’t want the voters to get campaign fatigue by starting too soon.

Um. My understanding is that the gov isn’t the only candidate blowing that thing off. Are the other candidates unpresidential now, too?

just curious, so how do you think they should plan to fund raise for a charity without you accusing them of self interest. The point of making it public is to make sure ppl will turn up and donate.

How many times have you seen charity events on tv for earthquakes victims? Are they all self promoters and demeaning to the victims?

Since when has Gov. Palin been conventional? If she decides to enter, it will be at a time of HER choosing, not NBC or Politico’s choosing.

Debates(pissing matches) this early in the campaign is a total waste of Palin’s time. She doesn’t need the exposure and it only serves to elevate the stature of a bunch of wannabe president candidates.

Sarah Palin is a different kind of politician so folks shouldn’t be expecting her to follow the old GOP/MSM playbook.

Sarah has stated, in print and on video, that she runs an unconventional campaign. So don’t look for her to follow the long established script.

I’m not saying she’s running, or she isn’t. I’m just saying that if she chooses to, it will be at a time and place of her choosing, when she throws her “Real Women Hunt RINO” bag into the ring.

;-)

So it would be better for Sean and Sarah to ignore the troops, so as not to be accused of self-promotion? How silly. I don’t think that many of the troops and their families agree with you. You have a severe case of PDS, which is nearly as incapacitating as Polaris Extremis, I understand. Bob

So what have you done to benefit the military lately?
