Mike Huckabee Out; Sarah Palin In?
Associated Content / Yahoo! News ^ | May 15, 2011 | Mark Whittington

Mike Huckabee, the amiable former governor of Arkansas and Fox News media personality, has decided after all not to run for president. It seems that he does not want to be president and is instead happy doing what he is doing.

That leaves the question, if not Huckabee, then who? The former governor had a big following among social conservatives, a considerable voting bloc in the Republican Party. Now that voting bloc has to find someone else to rally around.

But whom? There are a few people one can automatically cross off the list. Donald Trump has too much of a playboy image. Ron Paul's libertarian views on social issues are too off putting. Mitt Romney is seen as a Northeastern liberal. Newt Gingrich, while he will make a play for the social conservatives as a repentant sinner, still has the divorce issue hanging around his neck.

The safe but boring candidates, such as Tim Pawlenty and Mitch Daniels, might have some appeal, Daniels' somewhat interesting marital history notwithstanding. Rick Santorum might have a shot, though he is considered a long shot candidate.

That leaves us to the one person that the pundits are writing off, albeit prematurely. Her name is Sarah Palin, whose existence is the unacknowledged 800-pound Mama Grizzly in the room.

Bad poll numbers aside, Palin seems uniquely positioned to take advantage of Huckabee's absence from the race. Unique of all the other potential candidates, she has appeal for social, economic and national security conservatives. She appeals to the latter two because of her cogent critique of Obama administration policies....

Speaker Gingrich, Governor Romney and Senator Santorum won't be getting a lot of Baptist, evangelical and fundamentalist votes.

This was my immediate reaction, too. She’s the obvious beneficiary.

And for those of a more libertarian inclination, keep in mind that moral values are something we need in our politicians. Otherwise, they cannot be trusted.

Also, that unless all conservatives work together to support one another, then we will lose again, as we did in 2006 and 2008.

I will say that I think the Huckster took advantage of this segment of voters, by pretending to be something he is not. Elmer Gantry springs to mind.

But Sarah is the real thing. She will not disappoint them—or us. She means what she says, and she has amply demonstrated that she will not bend with the wind.

"Speaker Gingrich, Governor Romney and Senator Santorum won't be getting a lot of Baptist, evangelical and fundamentalist votes."

I'll support the most conservative person in the primaries. But I'll vote for whoever gets the nomination, be it Willard, Gingrich or what-have-you.

Those "principled conservatives" who plan to stand on their fine high horses and not vote at all may just as well go and vote for O.

Not supporting whoever gets nominated is almost equal to supporting Obama.

So they are all Liberal Democrats who love this guy?

The furniture swiping pastor had a following among evangelicals who hadn’t looked into his record.

Evangelicals, however, generaly think that second chances for those who mess up in a leadership position need to happen in a followship position.

Bye Huckster.

I was talking about the primaries and caucuses, not the general election.

And a few minutes ago, F. Chuck Todd referred to this constituency as “The pitchfork wing of the Republican Party.”

That is because she will drain the swamp, K-Street and all the parties with Shrimp and all the high end food they love will be gone. They will hate her more than Bush, especially the media. No parties and no stories after working hours, but did I mention no more parties? :-)...

Huckster, Trump and Christie are taking advantage of the voters. We need to get behind someone and ride it to victory, knocking out all Rinos. Newt and Mitt Witt are no good. Neither is Santorum.

As an evangelical who supported Huckabee in 2008, I can tell you I am not as closed minded as you might think. I would vote for a catholic, mormon or atheist in a heartbeat if felt he was the best candidate. Palin is a great conservative, but she has too many in the electorate who despise her already. I am hoping for someone who is not in the spotlight to come forward and engender excitement amongst GOP voters.

If she runs, she will be the primary beneficiary of the Huck voters. When he announced he would not run, he left the door wide open for her.

We shall see.

Damn straight. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees—someone mentioned the 800 lb. mamma grizzly—I’m getting the idea that they’re fined a thousand bucks every time they mention her name!

Mitch Daniels, my astericks—even with his defunding of PP. This pygmyRINO is the new Reagan? Sorry, I can’t even laugh.

The reasons Palin candidacy excites GOP voters are exactly the same ones that cause other portion of electorate to despise her.

Two problems there: First, as for Mr. Herman Cain. We’ve NEVER elected someone to the presidency who hasn’t held a federal elected or flag officer position. EVER. In 235 years.

Secondly, in the case of Rep. Michele Bachmann: Only one individual has ever won the presidency with just the House of Representatives on their resume. In a strange four-way race. Do you see 2012 being a 4-way race and Rep. Bachmann as Abraham Lincoln?
