Rick Perry has “huge” opening as many in GOP establishment remain uncommitted

As he weighs whether to jump into the 2012 Republican presidential race, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been dialing GOP establishment bigwigs across the country. In phone calls that sometimes stretch more than a half hour, Perry asks the same questions:

Is the door open for a new candidate? And how wide is it open?

Perry is finding that a vast reservoir of the Republican Party establishment — broadly defined to include elected officials, donors, strategists and activists whose support fuels presidential campaigns — is so far untapped, according to interviews conducted Monday and Tuesday with 19 major donors, strategists and party officials in13 states.

Establishment figures are waiting to see a candidate build and finance a national campaign, hone a strong economic message and, most of all, prove that he or she can go the distance to defeat President Obama. The biggest force driving these kingmakers is that they are hungry for a winner, and although former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is widely considered the early frontrunner, broad swaths of the party remain unconvinced that he’s the one.

SNIP

The absence of an overwhelming frontrunner is bolstering the candidacy of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a tea-party heroine who many key party figures believe cannot beat Obama.

SNIP

Republicans interviewed also said they were open to backing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), although both have adamantly denied they will run. But only one of the 19 establishment figures interviewed mentioned former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, even though she said in a Newsweek story this week that she is still considering a 2012 candidacy.

Rubio is not natural born, so he (& we) better get used to being the best Senator or Governor the world has ever seen.

that makes Rubio “native born” not “natural born” - big difference and we better not go soft on the issue now

I think Ohio MI and PA are tired of the Obama depression.NC is as well but the witch democratic gov. Purdue vetoed the voter ID law against the republican legislature so Obama could steal NC.(All's the republican controlled legislation said was bring back showing an ID to vote)The dems argued poor illegals and dead people could not vote.Obama and ACORN started all of this no voter ID crap.

I would be surprised to see Rubio jump into a VP role so quickly. I expect to see Rubio as the RNC Convention keynote to kick off the week in his home state of FL.

Rubio has an incredible career ahead and does not need to piggy back on the 2012 election.

If Perry is the candidate, I am actually hoping for Daniels as VP. Arguably the two best run states in the country. Two excellent chief executives who could pick Obama’s failures apart all of fall 2012 would be a great duo. I was strongly against Daniels as the candidate, but he’s got DC experience and state executive experience to be a great VP, without all the baggage of his moderate ways at the top of the ticket.

That cat was already let out of the bag when ObaMao, who is clearly not "natural born" was sworn in. They decidded "native born" was sufficient and he didn't even have to pass that test.

Chester A. Arthur also had one parent born in Canada when he ran and won on the VP ticket in 1880, FWIW.

Slight correction to my previous statement. Chester A. Arthur’s father was not Canadian. Arthur’s father was an Irish subject of the United Kingdom of Scottish descent, who naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1843

I would prefer a woman on the ticket already. But Rubio will steal all the hispanic votes from Obama. I think Palin would make the best energy secretary ever-drill baby drill!

Seems to me that it should be up to the people and not the RINO politboro who dub themselves the establishment.

So? Neither is Obama and it didn't stop him from becoming POTUS. I DARE the Dems and the MSM to question Rubio's qualifications.

I am sure whoever wins would LOVE Rubio on the ticket as VP. He all but guarantees FL, and probably impacts hispanic votes in other key states. He’s also a conservative dream candidate...speaks conservative values from the heart. I just don’t think he’ll opt to accept the invitation, if offered. In fact, I suspect he’ll take it off the table before the rumor mills put him on the ‘short list’.

BTW, he’s my Senator and I have never been happier with an elected official in my life. I am happy if he stays in the Senate for awhile, too.

I agree and like him. The only thing that concerned me a bit with Rubio was he would not embrace the tea party caucus at first arrival; maybe he has now?

The establishment, which like it or not; is where the $$$$$$$$$ is. The article said the establishment thinks Bachmann can’t beat Obama;and that Palin is not favored (by only one) and if they don’t think Bachmann could beat Obama they sure won’t think Palin can.Palin lacks the independent votes more so than Bachmann. It is not too late for anyone; but Palin needs to enter her horse in the show by Aug.11th.And my guts says I think the rumor is true that Rubio will be Perry’s VP. “ <<<

Couldn’t agree with you more. Gut and all. On this day, it is Perry’s to lose, and Rubio works with Perry hand in glove. Perry would prefer Rubio as the young rising star and being Hispanic seals the ticket for the win. Of course, Rubio will be anyone’s first VP choice as the no-brainer. Rick wants that big Republican money and he can get it. Cool.

Thanks for a grr-reat post!
