“Add GOP presidential candidates to the list of Republicans who aren't thrilled by House Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the debt limit,” USA Today writes, adding, “Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Tuesday that Boehner's approach is ‘wrong.’ … Ex-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney praised Boehner, but not the plan. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told Politico yesterday that Romney ‘applauds’ Boehner for ‘standing firm against raising taxes when our nation can least afford them.’ Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman was the first GOP presidential candidate to come out with a statement Monday supporting Boehner. He called it a ‘good first step.’” Pawlenty was firmly against.

At a fundraiser in Virginia, Mitt Romney took the unusual step of outlining his vice-presidential short list – Virginia Gov. Bob “McDonnell, Governor Christie of New Jersey and Marco Rubio of Florida,” Romney said, according to Bearing Drift, a conservative Virginia blog....

He'd be Myth's version of McCain's Sarah Palin pick.

McDonnell was probably mentioned as a courtesy, as the fund raiser was in Virginia. Christie and Rubio would be the targets.

__________

McDonnel is very good. He is conservative, a veteran, a business man, and is an excellent campaigner. He beat Creigh Deeds by 20 points the year after Obama carried the state by 7. He would help in VA, which is sure to be a battle ground.

In the campaign for governor, the Post and other MSM-Obama outfits tried desperately to make the campaign about conservative social issues, in an attempt to galvanize the northern Virginia liberal base. McDonnell stayed on message: jobs, jobs and more jobs. He is very, very savvy. Oh, and Virginia has a surplus without raising taxes.

I wonder if this was a pre-emptive strike, to keep Palin or Perry away from Christie and Rubio? Especially Rubio, since Christie has said publicly that someone would have to be crazy to pick him for VP.

Thank you! McDonnell sounds great, a business guy would further serve to bolster Romney’s biz cred, if he is selected. And, yes, I remember the situation with Deeds, now that you mentioned it.

Earlier, I said Christie and Rubio were Romney’s target. Christie has said words to the effect that a presidetial canditate would be a lunitic to pick him as a running mate. Christie says he is not VP material and at this point I partly agree. I don’t know that Christie could throttle it back and stay on message, etc.

However, and this could be very important, Christie has the grivitas, the presence, via sound bites and in interviews to skewer pretty much any sham liberal/MSM story line of the type that they use on a daily basis against conservatives. So, in that respect, a Christie as veep could be a huge advantage. This would allow Romney (or whoever) to ramain above the fray and they could still counter the press that will be aligned against them.

The problem there is....Romney isn't a conservative. Never has been...probably never will be.

This is tiresome but: MBA Harvard Buisness School, mgmt in Bain & Company, and saving the US hosting of 2002 Olympic games. Rich, yes part of that is being family rich, but still he understands economics. Compared to Obama, he is ....well there is no comparison, Obama is truly a zero. Compared to the other candidates, Romney has the top business background. But all, or most, of the Republican are pretty well qualified. Johnson, who won’t go anywhere, is one of the more qualified from a buisness standpoint.

Most important thing is to beat Obama. All else is secondary.

Christie would be a great attack dog as VP. He is a great debater — he never comes across as bitter or angry (as dare I say, a former governor of Alaska sometimes does)...He savaged Corzine and NJ public teachers unions while seeming witty and humorous/likable while doing it. Very talented.
