Obama May Not Run For A Second Term
Politicology ^ | September 16, 2011 | Noah Rothman

With President Obama’s political troubles mounting, some analysts are suggesting that President Obama’s Democratic backers may approach him in the very near future and ask him, politely, to forget that second term.

“I’m warning my clients — ‘Don’t run in 2012.” The Hill quotes one unnamed Democratic strategist today, voicing concerns about Obama’s coattails or lack thereof next year.

Wall Street Journal’s John Fund Says Obama’s Backers Are Backing Off:

(VIDEO AT LINK)

“The odds of me being reelected are much higher than the odds of me being elected in the first place,” Obama told a group of Washington D.C. fundraisers on Thursday night. That was meant to reassure Democratic donors rather than scare the bejeezus out of them. He may have accomplished the latter.

Obama has said on numerous occasions that he is perfectly content with serving a single term in the White House. Obama told NBC News in June that there are moments “where I say that one term is enough.” He famously declared in 2009 that if he did not have the economy turned around in three years that his presidency would be a “one term proposition.”

Now rumors emanating from unnamed White House sources are suggesting that the president’ political failures have left Obama on the verge of clinical depression. A Gawker article from September 12 suggested that Obama “has seemed increasingly listless to associates.”

There will be no primary strategy against the president. The money is on his side and the Democratic Party’s black voters would revolt and fracture the party, dooming their chances in 2012. There is a scenario where Obama would demurely reject another run at the presidency… A committee requesting he leave, promising a Supreme Court seat or similar high profile position and replacing him at the top of the ticket with one other popular Democratic politician.

Buyer’s remorse among Democrats and the nation in general, is high. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama’s chief rival for the Democratic nomination in 2008, is now the country’s most popular politician. President Obama’s political troubles would be undone by Hillary Clinton. She could reverse the party’s fortunes among working-class white voters who supporter her in the primaries (Hillary carried Ohio and Pennsylvania, two state’s that will be battlegrounds in 2012 and sponges of Democratic campaign dollars). Memories of the Clinton economy in the 1990s would nearly reverse Obama’s record of failure and the tainted image of the Democratic Party’s handling of the economy.

That does not mean this possibility is around the corner. President Obama, by bowing out, would virtually cede his place in the history books. For a President that has incontrovertibly viewed himself as historic and transitional, that would be a big blow. President Bush left office deeply unpopular and had resigned himself to vindication in the history books. It is less believable that Obama would similarly leave his fortunes to chance.

That said, if Obama did bow out, it would raise Democratic prospects for a win in 2012 exponentially.

If he doesn’t run, what happens to the campaign money already collected? Would it go to the new candidate, would it all have to be given back, would that even be feasible?

The Donks knew damned well that George McGovern couldn’t beat Milhouse back in ‘72 but they stuck with him anyway. They’ll go down in flames with Barky without batting an eye.

When has sex ever been a better explanatory variable than race?

I agree with you on the African American vote. If Obama isn’t on that ticket, the Dems can write off a ton of both Senate and Governor races in 2012.

For every Dem congressman who loses out due to Obama drag in their district, there is a statewide candidate who needs the African American vote to turn out big in urban areas.

Besides, this guy is such a narcissist, he is incapable of understanding how badly people think of the job he’s doing at the moment. He’s running.

In our area (rural PA), there are lots of seniors. They actually like Hillary. They probably liked Bill Clinton too but they don’t talk about that.
They don’t like Obama.
In 2012, if Obama’s the Dem candidate, my county will go for any Republican. If it’s Hillary...it’s a tossup.
They’re people I otherwise respect...staunch churchgoing pro-life older folks who have basically conservative views. I don’t understand why, but they approve of her.
Yes, even Catholics. Bring up Hillary’s pro-abort views and they roll their eyes like you’re a radical.
Yes, even gun owners.
She is Teflon-coated here. We have Bibles, coal stoves, few gays, lots of guns, churches on every side of you, and people still in their first marriage after decades have passed. We’re talking Aunt Bee’s Mayberry.
But they are ok with Hillary. :(

Where have you been for the last three years?

The Republicans don’t have a cooperative media that will carry the ball for them. You can have the greatest message in the world, but if you don’t have an effective way to get the message out, it doesn’t matter. For example, Dan Quayle misspelled potatoe, it was basically front page fodder for weeks. Clinton sells the White House for campaign donations and hardly a peep from the media on the matter.

Whether it be Gunwalker, Solyander, or the question of Obama’s eligibility, not a peep from the media. If it had been the Republicans responsible, you would not have heard the end of it.

Yes, when the Dems decide Obama must go, if he goes quietly he will be allowed to hold his head up high. If he digs in, the Dems will give whatever they have on the guy and the media will run with it.

He is definiately too delusional to ever think he can’t win.

They might. The Dems are in a tough spot.

If they get him to quit, the party could fracture into competing camps. If they stick with him, could cost them big time at the polls.

At the present pace...there’s no doubt that the Republicans will keep the same number of Representatives in the House, and I suspect that will be 52 Republicans in the Senate when the smoke clears in November.

Republicans can make much bigger gains than that. Democrats hold 23 of the 33 seats up for election. Also, this is the same senate class that was last up for election in 2006 when Republicans lost control of the senate. There are lots of 1 term Democrat senators who could be very vulnerable especially with Obama on the ballot.

I could see that leading to Obama getting in the low 30s of the popular vote and 0 electoral votes.

There's no way DC votes for the Republican candidate. It's the only place that gave its electoral votes to both McGovern and Mondale.

Probably shouldn’t be counting chicks just yet.

This whole scene is familiar somehow, the Dem in a hole he can’t climb out of. But I vaguely recall their fortunes reversing. I can’t find the details (clinically depressed since O got in) but something’s tugging at my memory.

His appetite for travel will no longer be on tax payers dime, but doesn't he and his family have Secret Service protection for life?

No, Congress changed it to ten years after leaving office. Bill Clinton is the last to receive lifetime Secret Service protection.

If Obama is replaced by a white person of either sex, blacks in general won’t vote.

We're talking about DemocRATS. Why would the candidate be limited to just 2 genders?

To be more specific, the moment a president has left office, his family doesn’t get it at all.

It's very much the same in my area (northumberland/union), but we were solid red in '08 and I don't see that changing in '12.

The most telling to me is, having been a dim all her life, my mom is livid about Ø and says she'll be voting R for the very first time.
We're talking 'staunch' to the point I worry for her cardiac state next November, but if it's finally getting thru to HER, I just KNOW there are millions more like her this time around.

Yes that's anectdotal, but this marxist maggot is causing a huge sea-change that I truly believe is gonna make for a tidalwave next year.

Btw, welcome to FR .. you're in the right place !

It’s just that you seem unaware of the double standard the media has for the Dems and Republicans.

Any hint of a scandal by the Republicans will be played up by the media to no end. And, considering Gunwalker, a bloody nuke would have to drop over Mexico city before the media would honestly investigate the Democrats.

You only have to look at the difference between how Obama and Palin were treated to know this is true.

Not at all. I'm just doubtful that there is this secret stash of Obama information that the GOP is clueless on but which could end his political career in an instant.

Laying foundation for resignation due to medical condition???

I think the veil has been lifted and everyone knows the fight we have in front of us. Obama or any democrat that runs will lose, Hillary knows this. There is no way she will taint her legacy anymore. She had her chance to bolt but she stuck it out and now the water is so tainted, there is no way she steps in it, even as VP.
I was predicting she would try to rescue the dems and challenge obama but they are beyond rescue.
The democrat party we all knew and loathed will be dead next November. It will be replaced by a party that is more reflective of the “greens” in Europe. An amalgam of fringe groups (unions, gays, self proclaimed commies, environuts etc) that occasionally gets control and promptly tears the place up before the adults return, which is very close to what they are now. They’re a group of radicals with no actual ideas that has been living off of name recognition (democrat national party) for a long time now.
