The Republican presidential candidates will gather for their second televised debate in New Hampshire on Tuesday night, when Bloomberg and the Washington Post host a forum centered entirely on the economy.
The back and forth on policy at the debate could be overshadowed by a bigger storyline: Can Rick Perry use the event to turn his turn his campaign around?
Perry, the governor of Texas, has lost his position as the front-runner in 2012 polls in recent weeks, amid criticism over his uneven debate performances. His position on Social Security, which he's described as a "Ponzi scheme" and a "monstrous lie" that ought to be administered by the 50 states instead of the federal government, will almost certainly come under scrutiny at the debate. His support for allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Texas public universities is also likely to come up, as his rivals have cast the policy as fiscally unwise.
At the last three debates, Perry has struggled to defend his policies, and he has also had trouble delivering scripted attacks against Mitt Romney, his leading opponent for the Republican presidential nomination. Will Perry be better prepared Tuesday night?
The answer could determine the fate of his campaign for the White House. While Perry raised $17 million in his first weeks as a presidential candidate, money alone won't allow the Texas governor to overcome skepticism among Republican voters and party insiders about his ability to defeat President Barack Obama. Only a strong debate showing and a steady grasp of issues can do that.
If Perry can't regain momentum now, he will not be able to recover.....

His debate performances don’t seem uneven to me, they seem universally bad.
“Tuesdays Republican debate will save Perrys campaign, or end it”
I’m sure hoping for for the latter.
The latter, in my opinion. But, it will come down to whether or not he can hold onto his funders, regardless of how bad or good he does in the debate.
Perry or no Perry, I’m not voting for Mr. National Sales Tax. You can vote for new taxes if you want. I ain’t gonna do it. NO WAY.
The voice of reason? In all this CainTrain? I am shocked. Reminds me a lot of the Paulbots in ‘08.
Can he memorize more than one line..
He should keep it simple, like “Oxygen good”, “obama bad”
I expect it to be painful “well pakistan.. we should, er, even Reagan said that, hmm, my opponent here claimed that india, er (long pause) we could..should consult with allies’
Anyway, at least we know why he avoided debates in Texas
ca gov brown just signed into law a similar bill to gov perry’s:
allows children of illegals in-state tuition.
this issue resonates with the following:
1. lower and middle class americans that pay taxes for the illegals’ health care, public schooling, and in-state tuition, but are denied the same for themselves.
2. military veterans, same as above.
3. legal immigrants who endured the years and costs of becoming americans, same as above.
2D, I hope Perry makes a much better showing and delivers good and sufficient answers to the Romney-promoting panel hosts who want to finish Rick Perry off. However, the brief time allowed to counter what is a full blown assault against Perry may require more than one debate. This debate theme centers on the economy, so Rick dragging around Exhibit A, the TEXAS economy, should by itself bury all the light weights who have delivered nothing but rhetoric. I like the guy with the goods rather than the chops. You know what I mean.
The Media manipulates people toward who will increase their revenues. They are not interested it what is happening to the country. They cover-up and hide the truth about Obama.
They decide who you will love or hate in the GOP race.
If he drops out, will Perry’s supporters back Cain or Romney?
I’ve clearly walked into the wrong post. Obviously no one here thinks Perry can pull it off. I just read that his center stage placement at the debate has been awarded to Mr Cain....who supports the Federal Reserve and has never governed and has admitted he will not support a Republican candidate if it’s Perry. I’m not buying any of it. Something is very wrong and it’s not Rick Perry. This is a set-up. We’re getting tricked again....without light filters and a teleprompter. Most people in the know understand his immigration policy in Texas. Most people in the know understand no vaccine was EVER forced on any little girl. Most people in the know can point to the fact that Perry has appointed more Blacks to important positions than any governor in America. Something stinks to high heaven.
Yeah, it can't possibly be that Rick "you-have-no-heart" Perry disqualified HIMSELF. No, it's a conspeeeeeeeracy.
I hope he does well. But I don't think it will be *the end* (as some are hoping) if he does only average. His strong point has never been formal debate - that was stated from day one. But he's great with speeches and campaigning. I thought we want someone who can win the general election, someone that will also attract independents. I think he can do that.
What can Perry say tomorrow night thats new? “I am now agains’t the Texas Dream Act”? Not gonna happen. Its Romney or Cain. I’m with Cain and I hope he teams up with Newt which would be a winning combo IMHO.
I agree, smell it clear out here on left coast.
“Rick “you-have-no-heart” Perry”
That’s it? Boy! One would trip over your bar.
He taps into the resentment of G.W. Bush.
Perry doesn't necessarily have to win the debate, but he can't stumble like he did in the Fox/Google debate. If Perry turns in another poor performance it won't help his campaign, but it won't kill it off either.
Perry is a true fiscal and social conservative and a strong proponent of states rights and limited govt. If conservatives eventually reject Perry, say hello to Mitt Romney, gop nominee 2012!
There’s a “Debate” Tuesday? Who knew? Will it be on teevee?
