Why I Am Done Defending Herman Cain
US News and World Report ^ | November 11, 2011 | Mary Kate Cary, former Bush 41 speechwriter

Posted on 11/13/2011 3:07:51 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

People have been asking me all week if conservatives will stick with Herman Cain, but I think he's got a bigger problem than the conservative vote. A lot more women than conservatives vote, and the women I've talked to are finished with him.

There's a new CBS poll which says that 38 percent of female Republican primary voters are "less likely to back him" now that more accusers have come forward. Among all registered voters, CBS reports that Cain has lost support among women since last month—from 28 percent in October to 15 percent now. My sense is that 15 percent of female registered voters remaining as Cain supporters may be a little high, because the poll was conducted before Cain's attorney started threatening any other potential accusers with the notion that they'd better "think twice" before coming forward.

This whole thing is a shame, because so many of us liked Herman Cain's ideas and business experience. I've been defending him for the last few weeks as he spoke out against the anonymous and vague charges. But they're not anonymous and vague anymore. There are faces, and names, and ugly stories to match. As Kathleen Parker put it, three accusers is a trend. Four is a tipping point.

Women who have worked in politics have seen his type before—casual with staff, jocular, kind of schmoozy. Fun at first, but then it becomes clear that they don't think the rules apply to them. After a while, there's an arrogance that sets in. Washington is full of bosses like that. I've worked for several.

Women don't like to talk about being sexually harassed because it's embarrassing. Life moves on and most of us would rather put bad incidents behind us. So for busy women—at least one of the accusers is a single mom with a teenage son—to come forward years later isn't easy. The fact that they're contemplating doing a joint press conference says to me they realize how high the stakes are, after they saw how Sharon Bialek's personal finances and work history were trashed. Safety in numbers.

These accusers who have come forward are about my age, and they seem very credible to me. They're not selling their stories to tabloids. They're not random women from all over the country, like some of former President Bill Clinton's accusers were. They all worked with Herman Cain specifically when he was at the Restaurant Association. They seem believable to me, and right now, he does not. I'm not defending him anymore.

So it’s the seriousness of the charge that counts?????

Not for me - I hanging in there with Cain. Now is some girl came out and said he did her with a cigar then I’d change my mind but that would be too an outrageous thing for a public servant to ever do...wouldn’t it?

I'm not defending him anymore.

Whew! What a relief. No one asked you to in the first place.

I did assume that when you posted this article, you were either pro post or at least semi agreeing with it. Your following statements did nothing to dissuade the argument.

Further, some of your posts did not seem conservative, surely not in disagreement with the article.

Now, maybe I’m just one of the many that mus-interpreted your posts, please dissuade me...

I would like to think that as a fellow veteran, we would agree philosophically at lest here... so...maybe I’m mistaken.

"Quoting Kathleen Parker tipped me off, if I didn't already suspect her as a Romneybot. Remind me who Miss Parker backed in 2008. I'm betting this woman never "defended" Mr. Cain in the first place. "Guilty until proven innocent" eh, Mary Kate? Yeah, the stakes are high, since Mr. Cain stands in between Gov. Romney and the nomination."

That sounded to you like I agreed with the author? On what planet?

This author, Ms. Cary, methinks violates "full disclosure" in her scurrilous "op-eds" against Cain and others.

To wit, she truly ought to come clean and say a) who is paying her off; or b) which of the candidates she has a back channel connection to and is clearly doing this on behalf of, and hopes for another high flying beltway job should he become President. Disgusting and VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.

Yeah, the stakes are high, since Mr. Cain stands in between Gov. Romney and the nomination

worth repeating! Then my question to the author of this article would be -- but what if Cain is innocent and all these charges are lies (my belief)? If dems successfuly twart Cain's run with these lies they will even further next time. It's not a matter of defending Cain - it's a matter of attacking lies and smear.

Never has Herman Cain been caught in a bold faced lie. If he had been caught, we would never hear the end of it. On the other hand, the left never tells the truth, if a lie isn’t too obvious. Who ya gonna believe? wt*

You are caving. None of us know what the settlements were and now you believe there’s something to this. You are very weak and I’m ashamed of you for even giving thought that any of this is true. The allegations all came from Chicago - what more do you need to believe Cain is innocent?

Chicago - you know, home of the Daley machine, David Axelrod and Barack Obama. geesh, statements like this make my heart hurt for our country.

I totally agree

Makes me think that mittens may be in cahoots with all this as well. All the papers are stating he is the front runner, yet I don’t think he has been in the lead in that many states. Even if tied with Cain - they state his is in the lead and Cain is in second????? WTH

I’m tired of hearing he’s pretty much guaranteed the GOP nomination!

Yes, you’re right! I took most of my offense about the article posted, not your comments. My apologies.

After going back and reading all of the previous posts, I relent and rightfully so it seems...

Sometimes I jump in about the posting without realizing that the poster is not actually in agreement. Again my apologies...

I think just about every woman has been sexually harassed or assaulted at some point in her life.

^^^
What? That is just too ridiculous. I think you have been brainwashed by the feminazis. Women are not sexually harassed by men any more than men are by women today.

No it wasn't. Powerful people are subject to this sort of legalized blackmail all the time. There were accusations made at Cain. They were proven fraudulent by an independent investigation. As in most cases the accusers were quietly removed from the organization. Standard Business practice.

No use keeping problem employees. They will be happier gone and the organization will function better with them gone. It was a win win solution. The confidentiality agreement is there to protect them as much as Cain. It prevents their record of fraudulent accusation following them to the next job. The problem here is the assumption there has to be something there. No there does not.

So some Bushie Establishment RINO finds her female friends are dumping Cain based on unfounded, probably untrue allegations promoted by liberals?

This is what’s wrong with the Republican Party.

If what Bialek claims happened in the care with Cain was true, why did she have to read an account of it at her news conference? If it was truly her experience she could describe the scene without notes.
