Sarah Palin to keynote CPAC
Hot Air ^ | January 5, 2012 | Tina Korbe

For the past four years, she has swayed, danced and dodged around the Conservative Political Action Conference, but, this year, Sarah Palin says she has committed to deliver the keynote address Feb. 11, the last day of the conference. ABC’s The Note recounts the rocky history between the former vice presidential candidate and CPAC’s sponsor, the American Conservative Union:

She declined to keynote the event in 2011, citing a scheduling conflict. But her refusal to participate fueled speculation that she wasn’t going because of GOProud, a gay Republican group, that planned to attend. She denied that was the case. Her political action committee, SarahPAC, did sponsor a reception at the convention.

In 2010, Palin cited ACU’s business dealings, particularly those of its then-chairman David Keene, as the reason for dodging CPAC.

In 2009, she initially accepted an invitation to kick off the convention, but then dropped out, saying that she had to attend to the “duties of governing.” She sent a taped message instead.

And in 2008, Palin cancelled her speech just two weeks before the event. By then, she had not been named Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential candidate, but in 2007, the man who would eventually become her running mate was booed by the crowd.

Why now? It’s fun to speculate. Could be that she’s keen to recover her standing in the CPAC straw poll, in which she’s fallen over the years. Could be that she doesn’t have quite so many opportunities to nab headlines as she once did. Could be that she thinks CPAC could be an ultra-dramatic setting to drop an endorsement. Or it could be that she still believes strongly in the message of limited government that she’s articulated from her first day on the national scene — and sees this as a timely opportunity to remind voters of that message.

It’s certain, though, that she’s still a lightning rod for emotion and opinion. As just one recent example, her remark to the effect that Michele Bachmann should drop out of the presidential race drew exceptional cheers and jeers. Today, Twitter and the blogosphere are alight with folks who say they’re excited to hear Palin speak at CPAC and those who say they saw this coming and, frankly, consider Palin a little passé.

Before I went to Ames, Iowa, this summer, I thought I was indifferent to the Sarah Palin appeal. But on a hot day in August, I wandered around the Iowa State Fair for an hour in a vain attempt to catch a glimpse of her. That taught me she matters to me — if for no other reason than that she matters to y’all. I’m still not always sure why — but I’m always curious. CPAC will be my first time to hear her live — and I confess: I’m excited.

There are still HUNDREDS of articles a day about her. Click on “Palin” here and take a look at my and the others’ threads. I am probably the #1 poster of Palin threads. Yes, the “interest” in her has died down a bit after her October demurral, but she still get about as much or more attention as the candidates and is often placed on the same level as the resident.

I look forward to watching her speech. She’s a brilliant speaker with a valuable message. If only the GOP establishment was on board with her message, we MIGHT be able to salvage our rights and freedoms. Instead, the GOP establishment is her sworn enemy.

Go Sarah! I just WISH you were running for president.

LOL! Calm down, gal...

Who is your backup to Sarahcuda that’s actually running?

Btw, Cain needs to get off the pot along with Palin and endorse one of the three conservatives in the race, too.

And that is the best roll for her, absent her running for president. I like her as kingmaker for GOP Tea Party candidates.

The only chance we will have to repeal Obamacare with Romney will be to control the Senate and House and have them DEMAND REPEAL.

Romney says he will repeal Obamacare, but I don’t trust him further than I can spit. The master of the flip would flop again and say he was misunderstood, that he would “correct” Obamacare.

Once and always a liar. Gingrich was right about that.

RE :”Hate to poop on your cupcakes, but I'm pretty sure she's going to announce her surprise candidacy there. She did promise that, if she ran, we could expect a very “unconventional” run. This would fit. Very nicely, indeed..... (P.S.) To all the Palinophobic nanny-complex wannabe-mommies and the “ Stop with the teasing, I just can't take it any more!!!” drama queens out there, don't waste yout time telling me to “Let it go.

Teasing??? Oh yes !

Yep, it sure was unconventional. Much more than those that kept asking her to run ever thought it would be.,

You are 100% correct, and past tense “Mattered” is also appropos. Her amazing popularity was due, the majority of it, to the hope that she would do for America what she did for Alaska. That was always her unspoken promise in the hearts and minds of millions upon millions of sincere, hard working, God fearing American patriots.

I still don’t understand how you can one minute say how you honor our troops for their willingness to sacrifice all for our country, and then in the next minute, turn your back on that same country as it cries out for your leadership in its hour of life-or-death need.

I’m dangerously close to despising her for her gutless decision, and for ripping the beating heart out of the country I love. She has really pissed me off, and she may well have destroyed our chance of winning in 2012.

It’s going to take an energized base to beat Obama, Acorn, SEIU, Soros, etc. I just don’t see anyone among the current field that conservatives can get excited about.

“Buck up or stay in the truck!”

“If you can’t ride two horses at once, you probably shouldn’t join the circus.”

“Don’t retreat… RELOAD!”

What a bad, sad joke.

Not at all. I think she can really turn up the heat if she wanted to. I believe she has kept a low profile so as not to take attention away from the primary candidates.

WOW, what made you think she would 'run' anyways? You sound like you think she led you on.

Check out that 'running' outfit.

She’s gonna run alright. She is so good and everyone wants her so badly that her name won’t have to be on any ballots to win.

You know, there might just be a pattern here.
Seems like I've heard of her doing things like that before, I just can't recall....

I believe her CPAC speech isn’t about announcing a run for POTUS, it’s about (a) increasing her value for 2016/2020 or (b) increasing her value as VPOTUS 2012.

By hook or by crook, if it’s not (a) or (b), it will be to get air time at the GOP convention this summer. The GOP leadership might not liker her, but they’ll need her. If they snub her at the convention, it will tick off the base. If they BAR her from the convention you’ll get a lot of pissed off people (some of which own powerful radio microphones).

Imagine our Sarah walking amongst the crowd during the convention rallying the troops!!!! If you thought a Palin impersonator as last year’s CPAC was a ruckas, imagine the real thing at the convention!!! Ohhhhhh, that’s gonna make the bigwigs steam.

And I am sure you will be clutching her waist on the back of the snowmobile as she rides down the center isle of the convention floor.

Hahahahaha! Let us all know when you (or your favorite candidate) are repeatedly invited, nay, even once invited to give the kickoff speech at CPAC! For that matter, please name one other person who CPAC has had to chase down. And why would that be, if she's a "washed-up quitter" or whatever you are intimating?

I believe they always have caterers.

You know, someone to serve sandwiches and such.

Many times, your comments about Governor Palin being in the kitchen like a good House Frau may be demeaning and misogynistic, but they usually make sense in the context of the thread. Not this time, buddy.

Define "O.K." Try to be specific... I'm pretty sure the question assumes facts not in evidence——you cad, you bounder.
