Exit Polls Reveal Tea Party Was a Bright Spot for Gingrich

The Florida primary may have delivered a decisive victory for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but the exit polls also revealed a bright spot for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich — the tea party.

Gingrich racked up a decisive victory of his own among voters who said they “strongly support” the tea party movement, according to exit poll data compiled by Fox News.

Overall, 45 percent of those voters chose Gingrich over Romney, who finished with just 33 percent of support from strong supporters of the tea party movement. The tea party is also thought to have played a key role in Gingrich’s come-from-behind victory over Romney in South Carolina.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum — often referred to as the conservative candidate along with Gingrich — drew 17 percent support from voters who said they strongly support the tea party.

“It tells me that if we could get the Santorum supporters to join Gingrich we could easily defeat Romney,” declared conservative Florida tea party leader Patricia Sullivan in an exclusive interview with Newsmax on Wednesday.

Sullivan, who founded the Patriot Army and co-founded the North Lake Tea Party in Florida, said Sunshine State exit polls prove Gingrich was the clear choice of tea party voters.

There were just not enough of them to carry the state....

Maybe I missed it in the article but I'm curious to know what percentage of those who voted identify with the tea party movement.

It’s Newt’s lack of organization that worries me. I mean there’s really no excuse for not getting the signatures to be on the Virginia ballot, especially since that’s a state he should win no problem.

Anyone know why he failed to get on the Mizzou ballot?

Bill McCollum said on Greta tonight that it’s LIKELY romney will not get the ‘winner take all’ delegates. A party not associated with Gingrich has already complained they want the rules enforced as they were written...and it only takes ONE complaint to put this into motion. So romney might end up with only 20+ delegates.
(And after all his hard work too.)/s

Hopefully Newt is past that.

You learn from your mistakes. It happened to Romney in 2008 and it’s obvous he learned.

Probably the same reason he failed to get on Virginia’s.

Disorganization. He was probably still laying the groundwork at the time.

“Anyone know why he failed to get on the Mizzou ballot?”

I’d read that he looks at it (as many others do) as “just a beauty contest” since no delegates will be awarded.

It’s my state, and I still haven’t gotten to the bottom of why in the world we’re doing things this way, this year. Have read it’ll only be caucuses, then also read that we’ll have a real primary in March (but not sure).

So are you talking about this thing in MO that happens on Tuesday? If anyone here can shed some light on this situation, and why, please let me know!

Well, stands to reason ... the original tea party was a bumch of pissed off guys that DID something and Newt is a HAS done something and we believe WILL do something as president kind of guy.

This is a good sign, IMO

Somebody can correct me, but you will probably be able to write in whom you choose.

Use it profitably and not to just make a statement.

Missouri will hold a primary on Feb 7th, which will not count for delegates toward the convention. The MO Republican Party will hold a caucus on March 17th which will determine the delegates sent to the convention.

Google Primary/Caucus schedule.
