Romney Gaffes Trumping the Field

Following the outcome of the Republican primary in Florida, the contest moves on to Nevada this weekend as pundits speculate whether the campaign for the Republican nomination for President is all but over and that Mitt Romney is the eventual nominee. In reality they could be correct if money begins to dry up significantly for Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Certainly, Gingrich and Santorum and Ron Paul, for that matter, would love to be in Romney’s shoes today.

Despite Romney’s dominance in the race, Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul are expected to be around for a good while to come, but without money they will not be able to wage an effective campaign. Other factors will also affect the outcome of the campaign.

You would expect that candidates for President would be well prepared before they enter the fray. Newt Gingrich is handling himself fairly well. So is Rick Santorum. But Mitt Romney is not. This is amazing since he served two terms as Governor of a major state, Massachusetts, ran for the U.S. Senate, and has a previous Presidential bid under his belt.

First, he botches the disclosure of his income tax returns. Did he really think he could run for President and not release his income tax returns? If he did this does not bode well for the man’s judgment. A candidate for President should release his returns when he announces. He will have to do so at some point anyway so just do it and get it over with. If Romney was embarrassed by his mega-income or the taxes he pays, then he should not be running. A candidate for President should think of himself as naked in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, fully exposed and nothing to hide. To think otherwise is foolish.

Next Romney says he is running for President for the middle class. The very rich are doing just fine and the poor have a safety net, he says. To make matters worse he says this to CNN. A candidate for President should be running for all of the people. What Romney likely meant was that the middle class is too rich to be poor and too poor to be rich and that the burden of supporting a family and paying taxes falls squarely on its shoulders and that the federal government does little to help out. The problem is that Romney said what he said and candidates for public office, especially for President, should not make statements that need further clarification.

Now to the rescue is Donald Trump. “The Donald” has decided to endorse Mitt Romney following earlier reports that he would support Newt Gingrich. I could use sarcasm to explain my reaction to this endorsement, but I don’t want to be misunderstood. So let me say this. “Who cares?” Maybe this endorsement will garner Trump an invitation to speak at the Republican convention where “The Donald” can display his skills as a self-promoter extraordinaire. In any case, Democrats will paint this as just one really rich guy supporting another really rich guy. And rich guy jokes are the last thing Romney needs.

All of this said Romney is destined to be the Republican nominee for President. This is his nomination to lose. But he has to shape up. This campaign should be seasoning Romney for the fall contest against President Obama. It should be sharpening his skills in debating and campaigning. Based on Mitt Romney’s performance so far, he should learn first and foremost to think before he speaks.

My parents and many of their relatives and friends voted third party in 1968. I never really understood why, until now.

***Based on Mitt Romney’s performance so far, he should learn first and foremost to think before he speaks.***

Remarkable for someone who has been campaigning for decades and already lost all his races but one.

His debate performances, prepared speeches and ad libs are pathetic - his mouth is running in high gear and his brain is in neutral.

When Newt is speaking - Romney tries hard not to look impressed - but it clear that he wishes he had Newt’s command of the issues.

Poor Mitt - he’s overrated - if he wasn’t a tall distinguished looking white male - he would be toast.

I voted third party then to, but it had to do more with a roommate (only for a few weeks) who was discovered literally selling herself for political favors. Her mother's position was BIG in GOP.

Always thought I'd write a book: VIRGIN IN THE WHOREHOUSE

Had no idea what was going on, till regular roommate returned from her student teaching.

I believe he only served one term and did not run for a second term.

Because polls showed he would have lost by a wide margin!

Think ‘Nevada polls’ trumping the field. Repubs no longer care about critical details. Sad times.
