Steve Israel to Dems: Avoid going to the National Convention

It’s an odd message to have coming from one of the Democratic Party’s top fundraisers: Democrats shouldn’t attend this year’s National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Speaking Tuesday, a top Democrat told a panel of reporters that he is advising Democrats to avoid this year’s convention. Instead, he is suggesting party members continue campaigning in their home districts in order to win re-election.

“If they want to win an election, they need to be in their districts,” said New York congressman Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The Democratic convention, to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, in early September to formally nominate President Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee, is viewed warily by some of the party’s candidates.

The message comes just hours after Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, announced that she would not attend the convention.

Ms. McCaskill said Tuesday she will spend the week campaigning in her home state instead. The Missouri Democrat remains in an extremely tight race for re-election, which has pitted her against one of the state’s most popular Republican candidates in years.

Asked Tuesday whether she will reconsider her decision, the Missouri Democrat reiterated her decision, admitting that her political career likely depends on winning in November.

“Would you go to North Carolina for a bunch of parties and glad-handing, or would you stay home and work as hard as you know how and convince Missourians they should rehire you?” Ms. McCaskill said Tuesday between Senate votes.

While Ms. McCaskill did not concede that her decision is partly due to recent polls showing President Obama struggling for support in Missouri, the Missouri Democrat did take a jab at the White House. The Missouri Democrat said she was recently disappointed with a decision announced by the Obama campaign that Mr. Obama would not to campaign with her in Missouri.

“I am just trying to win,” Ms. McCaskill told reporters. “In case you guys haven’t noticed, I’m in a really hard race,” she added, saying she had little interest in spending days she could spend campaigning “gladhanding” and attending parties.

The Missouri Democrat was the latest Democratic Party member to announce her intention not to attend the August festivities. The list of Democrats planning to forgo the convention now includes West Virginia’s Democratic House Rep. Nick Rahall, Sen. Joe Manchin and its governor, Earl Ray Tomblin. Other elected Democrats not going include Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah and Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

The decision likely relates to President Barack Obama’s low popularity in the state. Recent polls show Mr. Obama engaged in a tight race with presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who has steadily gain ground against Mr. Obama in recent weeks.

Mr. Israel’s decision comes as some House Democrats have discussed the possibility of winning back the House. Speaking earlier this year, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi expressed confidence in the odds of Democrats reclaiming the lower chamber. That said, taking back control of the House of Representatives from the Republicans is a daunting task for Mr. Israel and the Democrats. Democrats lost 65 seats in 2010, as conservatives from the Tea Party movement helped Republicans seize the House majority.

In addition, Republicans, flush with hundreds of millions of dollars in support from political action committees, have announced plans for targeting key Democrats that they deem vulnerable. Republicans have said repeatedly that Ms. McCaskill is one of their top Senate targets in 2012, and a sweep of Senate seats could provide Republicans with the necessary seats to take control of the Senate, a task both parties believe will be difficult unless Ms. McCaskill is unseated.

They should commit suicide and instruct their campaign managers to run on the sympathy vote.

It isn't koodies, he's just kinda stinky.

The kind of stink that sticks to anything or anyone who gets too close. It now has enveloped the entire Country.

As far as Claire goes, she is better off not eating all that North Carolina Barbecue they'll be serving at the Convention, if you know what I mean.

Never forget that the democrats forced this alien marxist on America. They own him. Since we do not jail politicians for their actions they must be driven out of office.

This is intended simply to provide cover for all the candidates and officials who have already announced they won’t be attending as well as provide an escape clause for others.
