By a 50–45 margin, voters disapprove of the court’s decision, a Newsweek/Daily Beast poll finds.
Voters are reacting in broadly negative ways to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the legislation known as Obamacare, a new Newsweek/Daily Beast poll finds, with a majority disapproving of the ruling, fearing health-care costs and taxes will rise, and preferring Mitt Romney to President Obama on the issue.
At the same time, voters scored the ruling a short-term political win for the president by a huge margin. Overall, 50 percent of those polled said they disapprove of the court’s 5–4 decision, while 45 percent said they support it. Consistently, a majority of voters said that they oppose the individual mandate (53 percent); believe taxes will increase (52 percent); believe their personal health-care costs will increase (56 percent); and disapprove of Obama’s handling of health care in general (58 percent). Only 24 percent of those polled said that they believe the ruling will make the country better off.
Against Romney, Obama maintains a narrow lead in the presidential race, 47 percent to 44 percent. Twenty-one percent said that they were open to changing their mind. State-by-state polls are more useful in predicting the actual outcome of a presidential contest, but national horse-race numbers are something to talk about while the election is still months away. The president’s approval rating stands at 45 percent. Fifty-nine percent of poll respondents said they believe the country is headed in the wrong direction—down slightly from about a year ago, in May 2011, when 65 percent said the country was on the wrong track.
Even as those polled said that they prefer Romney to Obama on health care—as well as almost every other issue, with the exception of terrorism, foreign policy, and education—voters said that they trust Democrats more than Republicans overall on the major questions facing the nation, 37 percent to 32 percent.
The poll was conducted by Douglas Schoen, a Democratic pollster who has worked for the campaigns of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, and other candidates. A national random sample of 600 likely voters was interviewed June 28, immediately following the announcement of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Affordable Care Act. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percent.
if Newsweek/Daily Beast admits 50-45 don’t like it the numbers are probably closer to 75-25....
President Romney and Republican Congress need to have the courage to balance the federal budget. The $900 Billion deficit for FY 2013 is an improvement, but certainly not good enough.
Beware of fake polls where a few hundred people are supposed to represent the views of 300 million. This is how the elite media got Clinton re-elected. When someone does a poll of, say, 10,000 people, then it may have some legitimacy.
Polling such as this one, conducted by Democrats, can’t be trusted. The only poll that counts will come in November.
I have been warning anybody that would listen to me since yesterday, that the MSM polls are going to start showing that many many more people are going to support Obamacare...ACCORDING TO THE PHONY POLLS THAT IS!!!
I think we should all be warned of the big lie that is going to take place shortly 1-3 weeks I wager.
I bet heavily that NBC/WSJ (basically run by Chuck Todd) and the usual suspects ABC,WASHPOST,NY TIMES/ABC are all going to start releasing polls that show a huge bounce in favor of Obama care.
They are going to CLAIM that since the Supreme Court has ruled, people have softened their opinions.
I am saying it will all be lies, hey the pollsters all lie all the time, nothing new here, but this will be orchestrated and very soon.
Maybe I will be proven wrong, it`s just that I see them doing this...Chuck Todd has already suggested he thinks there will be movement in his poll.
BEWARE! It just seems that so many on air folks, most Americans, take polls as if they were gospel, boggles my mind that people buy any of them, any of the time.
Fox News is as bad a poll as any of them btw.
If it’s Newsweek/Daily Beast, take it with a large grain of salt.
Who can anyone believe. The MSM all have a love affair with Obama as they have hairs standing up everywhere.
I see these polls all the time. They very frequently, not all the time but more often than not -— oversample Democrat voters by a significant margin, usually interview “registered voters” not “likely” voters, run their interviews during daytime hours when younger voters are likely to be home and not working or not the priniciple owner of the house, usually sample only 800-1200 respondents -— not exactly what you would call a large cross-section of the populace. In essence, the vast majority of these polls are virtually meaningless, but the news organizations know exaclty how use the results of these polls to attempt to sway public opinion.
We should all wait for a Rasmussen Likely Voter poll before we get too excited. I’m betting it will look a lot better than 50 to 45.
