This wasnt how it was supposed to be. Barack Obama, despite having placed the countrys future in greater jeopardy than he found it in 2008 and having no second-term plans for dealing with the deficit or entitlements, was supposed to coast to a second term against a hapless, floundering Mitt Romney.
Then along came that wretched debate and Romney lied and now hes ahead in the polls by a full percentage point. Todays Real Clear Politics average has Romney at 48.2%, the president at 47.2%. Romney now has a lead of between 1 and 5 points in three polls, Obama a lead of between 1 and 3 in two others, and the two tied according to Gallup.
These are not fun times for the likes of Andrew Sullivan, who supplants one days desperate keenings with the nexts even louder wails of grief for what might (should?) have been.
But The Washington Posts Ezra Klein is still back at the first stage of the grieving process, denial. His column today is titled In excitable pundits vs. political scientists, Ill take political scientists every time. (Presumably he himself is not an excitable pundit, so hes on safe ground casting stones.) Heres his lede into an article that is optimistic about the state of the election:
Political scientists will tell you that debates dont usually decide presidential elections, or even lead to noticeable changes in the polls. In their huge survey of every publicly available poll in the last 15 presidential campaigns, Robert Erikson and Christopher Wlezien concluded, there is no case where we can trace a substantial shift to the debates. A study by James Stimson came to much the same conclusion.
Its possible that Klein penned the piece before todays polling, but the current shift has been several days in the making. If you go back to Oct. 4, the day after the debate, Obama was still ahead 49.1% to 46%. By the end of the day yesterday, Obama had lost 1.8 percentage points and Romney had gained 2. The difference3.8 percentage pointsmight strike even Robert Erikson and Christopher Wlezien as noticeable. So what is Klein babbling on about?
Besides if he is going to put all his faith in political science, shouldnt he be worried that poli sci types are also responsible for the stat that no incumbent since Franklin Roosevelt has won re-election with the unemployment rate over 8%? Yes, I am aware of the happy, albeit inexplicable, tidings from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the month of September, but one more jobs report is due out prior to Election Day. After 43 straight months of joblessness north of 8%, neither Obama nor Klein should be hanging their hopes on the recent jobs numbers.
Another truism of political science that Klein choose to ignore is that presidents who seek re-election in the midst of a sagging economy usually lose. The best example of this tendency is Herbert Hoover, who lost his bid for a second term in 1932, but more recent cases include Jimmy Carter in 1980 and George H. W. Bush in 1992.
Klein ventures off on his own when he notes that promises to cut the deficit are a loser with the electorate. He cites the fate of deficit-cutter Walter Mondale in 1984 and George H.W. Bushs losing supply-side campaign. Ignoring the fact that a third-party candidate siphoned off votes from Bush the Elder, the fact remains that the deficit now is a thing apart from any previous deficit. And the primary reason for that is Obama, who increased the deficit he found on his first day of office by 50%.
Finally, Klein seems to be ignoring Team Obamas antics of the past several days, particularly their effort to save Big Bird. The loony ad the campaign is running certainly has a number of Kleins brethren gnashing their teeth. Then again, they dont teach about Big Bird in political science courses, so maybe Klein is right to ignore the ad.
Gonna be a few unhappy people on Nov 7 th!
Will the Obots riot in the streets?
These libs should be welcomed to Canada (or Cuba) with open arms...
“Funk” isn’t the most appropriate term. “Raging, psychotic fit” is more appropriate.
Libs should have vetted their guy. It’s their own fault.
“.......despite having placed the countrys future in greater jeopardy than he found it in 2008 and having no second-term plans for dealing with the deficit......”
Bulletin to Howard Portnoy: Plans for dealing with the deficit? Puhleeeze! The only plans the slimey little basturd has for dealing with the deficit is to INCREASE it! What’s it going to take to make seemingly intelligent people realize that everything Obunga has done that is harming the Nation and our people was INTENTIONAL, with MALICIOUS intent! Get a clue, Howie!
People do not trust Obama or the MSM. It will be hard for people to trust them ever again.
Dear Fellow Freepers,
I apologize for this reply showing up on this thread. Somehow in the process of posting a reply to 2nd Division Vet’s thread of an article by Howard Portnoy further up the page, my computer jumped to a thread several notches down the page. Sorry. Apologies to 2nd Div. Vet and everyone else.
People don’t trust anyone. Not the conservatives, Romney, academia, financial institutions, public employees, corporations, medicine or the establishment churches. The strongest opinions I encounter are that the election makes no difference to the economy, to the established fact of a police state, to the price of essentials such as fuel and food.
There is profound disillusionment everywhere. While I read about Democrat angst, the zer0bots see to be the only ones supportive of anyone in particular.
‘’Political scientists will tell you that debates dont usually decide presidential elections,...’’
Maybe that’s because no presidential candidate until now has ever given such a disastrous debate performance as Obama did against Mitt Romney, who garnered 67% in the post-debate polls, leaving Obama far behind in the 30’s.
In fact, if Obama’s performance hadn’t been so strikingly awful, liberal pundits like Ezra Klein would not still be obsessing over it a full week later.
Everyone wants to act as if they know the answer to everything. The liberal media acts as if they know what they are talking about. The Hollywood crowd acts as if they know everything. The President is arrogant and preaches as if he is the answer. He has had his chance to provide answers. It is time to fire him and find someone else who can give it a try.
Try talking about the election with a democrat these days.
Those d@mn people belong in a rubber room.
I think we can all forsee a 53/47 “ish” win for Romney,,give or take .05%, but if BigBird is on the ballot as “other” then it will be Romney 53, Obama 40, Bigbird 7%.
You know if he loses they will go on a spending spree eating 100 dollar a pound beef every knight and they will work in several overseas trips before they have to leave the White House. It will be shameless.
Ezra Klein is a hack who worked for Howard Dean.
