Vice presidential debate: Who won?
The Politico's The Arena ^ | October 11, 2012 | Arena Ref: Erika Lovley

Erika Lovley Moderator :

Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan debated Thursday night on a mix of policy issues.

Did Biden recover the ground that President Obama lost in the presidential debate last week? Was Ryan able to hold his own against the senior politician?

David N. Bossie President of Citizens United :

Paul Ryan looked presidential tonight and Joe Biden acted like a child.

It was clear that the Obama-Biden game plan is to lie to the American people because they do not have the facts on their side. We all know that President Obama failed miserably last week, and what Joe Biden displayed tonight is what liberals love to do...whine. When all the debating is done this country is still in despair because of the failed policies of the last four years.

Jim Manley Senior Director, QGA Public Affairs; former spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid :

For me, the funny thing was that Paul Ryan more than held his own on a perceived weakness - foreign policy - while Joe Biden largely dominated the budget and tax issues, which was supposed to be Ryan's forte. As far as these things go, it was a helluva debate, but Biden did what he needed to do. He was succinct, direct and to the point. He won....

I just saw “Beau” Biden yapping.

Made me think of Sean Connery telling Harrison Ford “We named the DOG Indiana!”

It will probably shake out as being about even.

People who fervently support O/B will think that he did well, people who fervently support R/R will think the same for their slate. Each candidate got their slate's points out to the public.

The deciders are the uncommiteds and the persuadables.

If the debate were basically to be considered a draw on substance, it comes down to demeanor [style] - and that is where Biden probably "lost". The majority of uncommiteds and persuadables did not like what Biden did. Biden probably came off as bitter, petty, and petulant.

In 1960, historians generally agree that Nixon won on substance in the first debate.

HOWEVER, the public declared that Kennedy “won” that debate - and it was basically on style. Kennedy was well-rested and tanned. Nixon was sick with the flu and was sweating under the bright lights of the studio.

Big Bird apparently bumped that headline down.

Big Bird is overpaid. Big Bird pulled down $314K in 2010.

If Big Bird were a creature of a free economy, he would be entitled to every penny. However, he is not.

It's time for Big Bird to go extinct! It's time to can Public Broadcasting!

* the October jobs report, due out 4 days before the election.

Right! Now that they've been busted for incomplete data in their most recent report, they've pretty much shot their chance to manipulate those numbers just before the election. They're under the microscope.

I disagree. They’ve got away with two blatantly ridiculous job reports now. It’ll be worth it to them to cheat on a third one four days before the election. It won’t matter to them if it’s exposed as bogus by day five.
