Democrat Running for Governor of Arkansas Promises Free College

Of course!

Democrats love to promise expensive things for free. Free healthcare, free cell phones, free money. Why not free college?

Meet Bill Halter who’s running for governor of Arkansas. The emphasis below is mine.

Bill’s letter to Arkansans

Young adults who receive a college degree today on average can expect to earn $1 million more over the course of their working live than similarly situated Arkansans who do not. But Arkansas currently ranks 49th out of 50 states in the percentage of our workforce with college degrees – behind Mississippi and ahead of only West Virginia. And we’re not just competing with other states. Within two decades, China will have 200 million college graduates. That’s more than the entire U.S. workforce. Within the next ten years, India will produce four times as many college graduates as the United States. We must meet this challenge. It is time to give every Arkansas high school student the opportunity to attend college if they earn it.

I call it the Arkansas Promise.

Simply stated, if you go to high school in Arkansas, qualify for a lottery scholarship, maintain a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend college in the state, we promise to pay your collegetuition......

Here’s the problem with this deal. You are a kid who graduates and gets this deal for a free college degree in Arkansas to study engineering.

He graduates four years later. In the state of Arkansas, there just isn’t any real job openings for young folks with an engineering degree. So he leaves and makes lots of cash out in Texas where jobs are plentiful.

The advantage gained by this remarkable revenue expenditure....you help young folks from Arkansas to leave and never pay taxes back to the state to help continue the program. Figure probably ten thousand young folks in the state would fit into the program and four years later....the vast majority leave the state. Does it make sense?

Why force people to pay for what they want when giving it for free makes such great campaign ads.

Go Democrats!

Next up: Free mandated vacations!

Would be simpler and less expensive to just promise free diplomas.

How about a free BMW to get to class?”

A Black client who died of cancer several years ago had a son who railed continuously because he didn’t have a BMW. She always used to tell him that he did indeed have a BMW he just didn’t realize that in his case it stood for Black Man Walking.

She was such a treasure and worked tirelessly with Black teenagers and their families. Everytime I see a BMW I think of her.

This piece of propaganda will never die. Nobody benefits when graduates have worthless or unmarketable degrees.

I don't have a problem with the idea of free higher education...but I wouldn't have it with the current educational system we have. It'd be a waste of money.

The system they have in Germany for free higher education seems to work well. Of course, not everyone goes to Universität; most people end up in either labor school/apprenticeships or trade schools (and things like accountancy count as a trade there). I've often thought that a similar educational system here would be much better.
