LET Rand Paul have his epic filibuster and Ted Cruz his scowling threats to shut down the government. Let Chris Christie thunder to a second term as the governor of New Jersey, his hubris flowering as his ultimate designs on the White House take shape.
Jeb Bush, lying low in the subtropics of Florida, has something they don’t: the unalloyed affection of many of the Republican Party’s most influential moneymen, who are waiting for word on what he’ll do, hoping that he’ll seek the 2016 presidential nomination and noting with amusement how far he has drifted off fickle pundits’ radar, at least for the moment.
Politics today has a shorter memory than ever. It also has a more furious metabolism, which Bush hasn’t fed much since March, when he was promoting a new book on immigration and created enormous confusion about whether he does or doesn’t support a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who came here illegally. (He later clarified that he does, with caveats, and even later praised immigrants for being “more fertile.”) That awkwardness gave some of his supporters pause, as they wondered whether he’d been too long out of the fray and was too clumsy for the split-second hyperscrutiny of the Twitter era. He hasn’t run for anything since 2002, when he was re-elected as the governor of Florida, an office he left in early 2007. A whole lot has changed since.....

...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Let’s start that conversation by acknowledging we aren’t going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

12 million? Does he really believe there are only 12 million? And that they all want to work, not get welfare or deal drugs or grow dope in the National forests, and they want to pay taxes?
And even if they want to work, what about the millions of US citizens who can’t find any?
This is one of the reaons why I have come to loathe Rand Paul!!!
Nobama - what do you think? I think R.Paul is revealing his true self and it’s very bad. Of course this was from March but I remember when his pro-let them all come-immigration views were made public. That is standard libertarian POV. Open borders, let ‘em all come in without any restraint or anything.
They know the number of much higher than 12 million, they know these people will be a drag on the economy and will lower income nationally, they know that giving them passes to break the law will mean more laws broken (duh), they know that giving them benefits will just encourage more to come here illegally.
That know this. They do not care.
They just want to dilute YOUR vote.
The political left is positively salivating at the idea that the GOP would push Jeb through to the nomination in 2016. They know full well that the American people are NOT going to elect another Bush until all living memory of them is in the grave.
Note that he sez, we’re not going to deport 12 million — we’re going to let all of them stay. But amnesty? No, not me. Ridiculous.
What I don’t get is why R. Paul wants all those illegals to stay. Philosophically, that’s what Libertarians want - it’s a plank of the LP platform - but I have no idea why that want that. I realize why teh “regular” GOPers want it, to keep wages low and have plenty of workers to keep a certain percentage of unemployed to satisfy big business.
Did you read Sultan Knish’s recent article about the Republican Party? The best assessment I’ve ever read. I’ve find a link for you if you haven’t read it.
Basically we’re doomed unless people like us take over the party. It’s been rotten all along and those running it just made noises of the sort that conservative voters liked so we’d vote for them. But now they don’t even bother with the noises any more.
Each time people fail to or refuse to vote for the winner of the Pubbie nomination because he (or she) “can’t walk on water” (as one of our emeritus FReepers once put it), there is no visible conservative turnout, so the next nominee runs even further to the left. That’s literally the only problem there is in the polity.
We need flat tax.
We need reasonably unfettered hydrocarbon production, to the tune of turning the US into an energy exporter.
We need term limits.
We need voter ID.
We need to purge the judicial benches of libs.
We need to regain control of the public educational system.
We need to ban Islam — it isn’t a religion, it’s medieval fascism, and the Koran is a medieval Mein Kampf.
Less generally, we need to repeal Obamacare.
