Nationally syndicated talk-radio host Steve Deace, an Iowa native who has built a national brand as an in-house critic of the conservative movement, says Democrats are out-gunning Republicans on strategy and message.
“Say what you will, the Democrats offer solutions,” Deace said.
Meanwhile, the GOP issues statements that come across like sponsors’ patches on NASCAR drivers or scout badges, he said.
Deace, 40, spoke for about two hours to a crowd of 80 people at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll last week, an event organized by the Carroll Area Tea Party.
His central theme: Republicans shouldn’t get mad with Democrats; they should learn from their opponents’ passion.
“We should not be upset,” Deace said. “We should be emulating them.”
Deace said President Barack Obama and Democrats have developed superior organizing tactics — and they don’t shrink from liberal instincts, as too many conservatives do with their own world views.
“The side that cares the least about losing always wins,” Deace said.
Deace unleashed a torrent of rhetorical fire on American culture’s celebrity obsession, saying it has corrupted politics and turn on its head the foundation of democracy: Public servants working for the people.
“Why do we rally around these people like they’re matinee idols on ‘Tiger Beat?’ ” Deace said.
He said Speaker of the U.S. House John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, is little more than a handmaiden for the Obama agenda. He joked that Boehner is likely to change his middle name to “Cave.”
“Congress is less popular than root canals and cockroaches,” Deace said.
Deace lives in West Des Moines, but his radio show has a national reach with affiliates in New York City, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Houston, Fresno, Calif., and dozens of other cities. His show airs on WHO-Radio.
“I’m not just a talk-show host; I’m an activist,” Deace said.
During his remarks, Deace drew some of the most sustained applause in complimenting the work of recently elected U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a potential contender for the White House.
“One thing I’ve realized about Iowans is we value sincerity,” Deace said, terming Cruz a “force of nature” who is willing to challenge the system. Deace stopped short of endorsing Cruz but said he would like to see the Texan run because he can play offense with his principles.
In an interview, Deace said he plans to seek elected office himself someday (probably governor) but will not run as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in 2014.
“I took a long look at this race,” Deace said. “I know a lot of people in the conservative movement around the country that want to support a full-spectrum conservative for the nomination. They view this as a winnable seat.”
But Deace said, “In the end, I just didn’t get the sense that, frankly, it was something God was calling me to do. And it would probably mean I would have to give up my radio show just at a time when it is growing.”
What’s more, Deace said his show can help several candidates around the nation get elected.
Deace said he expects to the GOP Senate race to go to convention.
He doesn’t think a candidate can reach 35 percent in the primary.
Deace reserved some of his strongest comments in the interview for Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican he described as a weakened elected official with no worldview or political future beyond her current position.
“Kim has a lot of issues that a lot of Iowa politicos are aware of, beyond simple worldview issues — a lot of stuff that would probably be exposed in a Senate race when this might be the 51st seat in the United States Senate,” Deace said. “I’m not in the business of dragging people through stuff publicly. It’s just stuff a lot of people know, stuff that would come out.”
When asked to elaborate or point out specifics, Deace said, “She has some issues, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

You wonder why a smart,accomplished man like Ted Cruz will rock the political world now? I dont,we have had Idiots leading the Republican Party,nominating Rinos who believe in Nothing but High paid ass holes like Karl Rove,they may have won a few but where has that gotten the Country?

We are lousy with dems. I don’t care how loud their defenders scream. You cannot stand in defense of democrat ideas, support them, fight to stop conservatives...and BE conservative. Thats what Perry did, thats what this idiot did and thats what most R’s do every day in DC.
Anyone still supporting that deserves all the scorn heaped on them. Because I fail to see the difference between one of ‘us’ doing it and a dem doing the same exact thing.
This Deace guy seems to be with us but the phrases he uses are just weird sometimes. It’s like a freeper on the air who often forgets to use scare quotes and sarcasm tags. Stop using their terms like “false debates”. You might mean it the opposite of the way that Obama and Pelosi use it, but why use it?
For me, seeing someone use the terms of the left has always led to later discovery of more leftist connections. It never fails. People that use those terms do so out of familiarity with them. He’s comfortable with it. Huge red flag.
If "activist" means "smart aleck who likes to stir things up and then stand back and watch the results," then I guess he's an "activist." My mother used to listen to him until she started wondering if he was actually sabotaging Republican candidates one by one until they were all unacceptable to anyone.

I understand exactly what the guy said, and the reaction by some on this post is why our side is barely treading water.
Here’s an example of a democrat ‘solution’: Gun Buy Back programs. Now of course, we KNOW it doesn’t solve anything, but where’s the opposition from our side? Yeah, we’ll set up a table to offer more money, and hope we don’t get knocked upside the head by the local cops. But wouldn’t it be cool if on Gun Buy Back Day, and few GOP state reps showed up at the 2nd Amendment table?
Seems his criticizing the GOP where it needs to be criticized: Lack of a coherent message, unwillingness to fight on principles; in short, allowing the other side to dictate the rules of engagement. I for one have been preaching against this for years. And the worst flaw is too many on our side can’t wait to throw someone overboard for the slightest thing, while the other side ALWAYS circle the wagons around their own.
We don’t have to emulate an enemy, but when they are making advances, and we are not, we should at least take a look at what they are doing, and learn from it.

I have heard of him. His radio show airs in the DC area on 730 AM/102.9 FM 9 pm-midnight during the week.
He has the same bumper music going in and out of breaks, “We won’t get fooled again” by the Who, for all three hours of his show, which gets a little maddening. I’ve tried listening to him (his major talk competition in his time slot in Washington is the wiener nation, Michael Savage from 9-11 and the lisper, John Batchelor, from 11-1 on WMAL 630/105.9).
Deace mixes conservatism with evangelical Protestantism. While I tend to agree with him on politics, he’s just OK to listen to; not the greatest. Lars Larson is a better late night radio host than Deace, but he’s not on in the DC area so far as I know. WTNT once had Rusty Humphries on their air; I don’t think Deace is any better than Rusty.
In the past few weeks, Deace’s behavior has been odd. Nothing caught my attention more than when he suddenly announced that he was going to run for Polk County GOP Chairman on Tuesday night, just hours before the vote was scheduled. At the time, I wondered why a radio show host, who already has a 50,000-watt platform that he uses to advocate for his beliefs and the candidates he supports would want to deal with the responsibilities of leading a county political party? That decision now makes a little more sense. …
