It's a runoff in two days that is the focus of the country. Mississippi voters will decide the fate of veteran Republican Sen. Thad Cochran. He's being challenged by tea party candidate Chris McDaniel.

The vote comes two weeks after the House majority leader, Eric Cantor, lost a primary stunner in Virginia.

Mississippi's primary runoff is now a political blockbuster. And it's attracting plenty of star power.

"I encourage you to stand with a proven and respected leader," says former NFL quarterback Brett Favre, a Mississippi native, in one TV ad.

"Chris McDaniel is a type of guy who will fight for us," Republican 2008 vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin declares in a radio ad.

The Southern showdown between Cochran and McDaniel has turned into a battle for the ages. Local polls show the race is tight - but polls said the Cantor primary race was close, too.

CBS News' Political Director John Dickerson says the midterm primaries are straddling the GOP's future....

That’s an interesting question.

I think the kids all grew up in New Orleans.

Eli played for Ole Miss.

Archie, the father, was born and raised in Mississippi, and he also played at Ole Miss.

“If McDaniel wins, you will never hear about it on the news. It will be down the memory hole, like it never existed . “

You are mistaken. The Msm hates GOPe, you guys are irrelevant unless you beat GOPe. If Cochran wins, there will be no coverage just as there was no coverage when McConnell won or Cornyn won.

You get coverage only when something bad happens to GOPe like when Cantor loses.

MSM views teaparty as useful idiots when they take down GOPe.

It’s an open primary. However, everyone who voted in the dem primary can’t vote in the GOP runoff.

House members cannot be appointed by a govenor. They must be elected by the people.

Is that what determines whether it’s open? True in other states as well, I wonder?

Yes.

I believe the issue was actually decided in the Supreme Court.

Also, lots of states don’t register voters by political party, so, in that case, there is really no basis for exclusion from any particular primary.

Bottom line - when government pays the bill, government can write the rules.

“It will be demoralizing if Independent and Democrat voters decide the future of the GOP in Mississippi.”

More so than the outside money and spokesmen/women from out of state who have pumped love into an unproven candidate. Our political Justin Bieber.

To vote in the runoff, they will have had to vote in the election that caused the runoff. IOW, they would have had to already voted in the Republican Primary, if I understand correctly. At least that’s the way it is in my state.

In MS, the rule is an exclusionary one, and those who voted in the DEM primary may not vote in the GOP primary runoff. All others may vote, in partiucular, those who did not vote in the earlier primary.

MS law also says that a voter in a primary MUST intend to support that party in the general election. This law can't be enforced, because ballots are secret.

No person shall be eligible to participate in any primary election unless he intends to support the nominations made in the primary in which he participates.

So, WKB, since you’ve seen the ads, I assume you are in Mississippi. Can you tell us how this latest antic by Cochran and “Boss Hog” Barbour is playing out with the average citizen in Mississippi? Do you think it will work or backfire on Cochran?

I always trust the word of NFL quarterbacks when they are paid to tell me who to vote for.

I think it was too late for Brett to change any minds or sway that many voters. Outside of Hattiesburg and Kiln he doesn’t have a lot of influence anyway. He could do more good in Green Bay than Ms. JUST MHO

Good question. Peyton would be the only one that would voice an opinion. No one would listen because he didn’t go to Ole Miss.

I appreciate your comment about the Brett Favre ad, but you did not answer the question I asked you. I’ve been trying to get an answer to that question for days. No one has given me the answer. But thank you for your comment anyhow.
