Republican Bonnie Garcia on Friday conceded defeat in the 28th Senate District race.
In a mass email, Garcia, a former assemblywoman, said she called Republican and Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone to congratulate him and wish him well.
I'm proud of the fact that I stayed true to who I am without straying from my core values and sought to serve the entire community, not just those who voted for me, she said. My sincere desire is that we continue to move in a positive direction to embrace the changing demographics of our country, rebuild our educational institutions to give every child a fighting chance and strengthen the economy of our state to lift every senior, veteran and family out of poverty.
Going forward, I'm hopeful our leaders will work with ethics and integrity to focus on a common goal of restoring the promise of the Golden State for all of us.
Stone and Garcia sought to represent a newly created district covering southwest county and the Coachella Valley.
Their campaign was one of the most expensive and negative of the Inland election cycle. Garcia questioned Stones integrity while Stone accused Garcia of being a Sacramento insider.

This is a state legislative runoff between two Republicans, but it may have repercussions in 2016. State Assemblyman Brian Nestande thought about running, but ran for Congress against Paul Ruiz and lost. It’s very early, but Bonnie Garcia could conceivable seek a comeback by running against Ruiz in the next cycle, as she polled credibly against Stone and won the eastern part of the district. Nestande ran an inept campaign and Garcia would have made a better showing.
Bonnie Garcia also has a better surname for that CD than Nestande had.
(Having the “right kind of” surname isn’t enough to guarantee victory, of course, or else Recchia would have defeated Grimm in the heavily Italian NY-11 instead of losing in a landslide; but it sounds as if Garcia is a competent politician.)
