This top Rand Paul donor just made a big endorsement in the presidential race

Tech entrepreneur Scott Banister has long been an ally to the liberty movement. The angel investor, IronPort founder, and PayPal board member donated $3 million to a Rand Paul supporting Super PAC, and has been a vocal supporter of the libertarian Republican.

Now that Rand Paul is out of the presidential race, Banister has thrown his support behind Ted Cruz. Cruz is a self-described constitutional conservative who earned the endorsements of both Rand and Ron Paul in his 2012 Texas Senate race.

Scott Banister

Our best chance for a constitutional presidency is now @tedcruz. #LibertariansForCruz

Cruz's relationship with the Pauls soured somewhat during the campaign, particularly as he employed more hawkish undertones on foreign policy, and didn't show up for Rand Paul's recent Audit the Fed vote in the Senate.

To many Paul supporters however, Cruz seems like a logical second choice despite his imperfections. At the very least, he has stood against the U.S. pursuing regime change abroad, and demonstrated some degree of willingness to reform the NSA.

Will Banister's #LibertariansForCruz movement take off? Time will tell as Paul's supporters realign.

You probably already know that Rand’s no Ron. You can count me as libertarian. (See my tagline.)

He could have just saved his money and endorsed Trump. Oh wait, can’t buy any influence and favors that way.

Ted Cruz is conservative. There are areas where conservative and libertarian overlap. Many libertarians have voted Republican for who they thought was conservative in order to have a voice between conservative and liberal.

Note I did not say Ted Cruz is perfect.

I said he is conservative.

He tries to be in the Ronald Reagan mold

Reagan wasn’t perfect, either.

The Reagan coalition included libertarians.

When Ron says Ted is no libertarian, that is meaningless gibberish.

Nobody that I know of claims he is a libertarian.

He is a conservative.

Marco Rubio is a wild-eyed interventionist, more like Lindsey Graham and McCain, which is nuts, and is neither conservative nor libertarian.

Who knows what Trump is...

Yes, only Lord Trump has clean skirts, all other candidates have only their own interests at heart.

Cruz is the natural choice for libertarians since Rand dropped out.

Trump is many things, but libertarian isn’t one of them (nor is conservative).

Trump’s getting most of Paul’s supporters for his foreign policy and bashing the same people who hate Rand.

Most Rand supporters dislike Cruz and envy what Trump has done.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/01/12/pat-buchanan-believes-donald-trump-is-the-future-of-the-republican-party/

Americans did not want to get involved in Georgia, Crimea or Ukraine. They do not want to send an army back to Iraq or into Syria. And Trump, in his emphasis on building up America, and letting these folks solve their problems, is in line with national thinking. The hour of the liberal interventionists like Hillary Clinton in Libya, like the neocons’ hour of power in the GOP, is over.

Yet Trump recognizes the inner hawk in Republicans, dating to the Cold War, when he says, about ISIS: “I will bomb the [expletive] out of them.”

Politically, he has this about right.

Who cares who this person endorses? If he had endorsed Trump, then he would be the scum of the earth. The bashing and trashing of this person would have never stopped.

Well, by golly - let’s all get a huge dose of Ted’s conservatism, so we can lie, commit voter intimidation and fraud. Yes sir, those are conservative principles we all want to emulate. You do realize that the word conservative has lost all meaning, don’t you?

Is Cruz more conservative than Trump? In my view yes. Are their critical points where I believe Trump is more conservative than Cruz? Yes.
I add everything including intangibles and I select Trump as my first choice and Cruz my second choice. I do not dislike either but feel more strongly that Truump is the person we need at this time.

Actually, you are correct. My comment was not really fair. A quip the quipped a bit too far.

Trump is a populist. Cruz a globalist not a conservative.
