Subj: Judge Pickering's nomination blocked & the latest news from the Senate races

Date: 03/20/2002 7:37:27 PM Central Standard Time
From: billfrist@listserv.nrsc.org

Dear NRSC E-member,

In a jarring reminder of why we must elect a Bush Majority this November, Senate Democrats killed the nomination of Judge Charles Pickering, President Bush's choice for the federal bench. President Bush lamented "We are seeing a pattern where too often judicial confirmations are turned into ideological battles that delay justice and hurt our democracy." One more reason to try and sign up as many E-members as you can by telling them to visit:

http://www.nrsc.org/nrscweb/emembership.html

Every person you get to sign up is one more person who will help to inform others about why it is so crucial that Republicans regain a Majority in the United States Senate.

Sincerely,

Bill Frist, M.D.

IN THE STATES

Here's the latest from the states our members have visited the most in the past week:

South Dakota
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota has taken the lead as Democrats prepare to defend their narrow majority in this year´s elections. Across the aisle, Tennessee Republican Bill Frist is helping to shape his party´s election-year message and heading its Senate fundraising operation.

Georgia
State Rep. Bob Irvin of House District 45 in Atlanta is proposing a constitutional change in how legislative and congressional reapportionment would be handled after the next census in 2010.
more from "Irvin's plan worthy idea"

North Carolina
Republican Senate candidate Elizabeth Dole will pick up the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at a press conference in Raleigh this morning.

“It is the good housekeeping seal of approval from the business community,” said Bill Miller, the chamber’s political director. “Of all the candidates involved in the race, this is the candidate who best represents the agenda we want to put forth in the 108th Congress.”
more from "Dole Gets Chamber Endorsement"

Illinois
Underfunded but with plenty of political capital, state Rep. Jim Durkin on Tuesday won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, setting up a November showdown with well-funded Democratic incumbent Dick Durbin.
more from "State Rep. Jim Durkin wins Illinois Primary"

Minnesota

Saint Paul, MN--- The Coleman campaign today expressed its disappointment that the Wellstone campaign still refuses to make public 60% of its donations. The $2.4 million of un-itemized donations from the $4 million raised is still unknown in terms of who donated, how much and where they are from. The Wellstone campaign is reportedly willing to make records open to the press but not the public at large.

Each E-News will feature the 5 most popular races for the past week. If you would like to see another race mentioned encourage your friends to visit that state to drive its traffic up.

Please support the National Republican Senatorial Committee in its campaign to TAKE BACK THE SENATE! If Republicans were in charge of the Senate CFR would not have passed, the Pickering nomination and others would have been approved, and we would have passed an Energy Bill with ANWR drilling approved just to name a few things that a daschle led Senate has obstructed and on CFR rushed through!

There's only one thing to do. Republicans must retake the Senate. There's no if's, and's or but's about it! Allowing Daschle and Daschle-crats to remain in charge, isn't an option. If Daschle would have allowed a floor vote by the full Senate, Judge Pickering would have been approved. Some tactical moves by minority leader Lott, will not get Bush's nominees approved in a timely manner.

Would slapping a few Dems. around be considered out of order? Or, from now on whenever a Democrat makes a statement, an accusation, a promise, a claim, on talk shows, news shows, TV sets, movie sets, responds to an article, an event, a fundraiser, a policy...to the press and to the cameras Republicans at all times should simply give the reporter the narrow-eyed Rummy look and say to the Democrats, "Bunk." Or we could drive them nuts by repeating their statements back to them. (You cut it out!). Sorry, long day. (^:

You are so right -- Taking Back the Senate is the only way to get conservative judicial nominations approved. This election is so important!

Last time the GOP controled the House, Senate and executive branch for more than a few months, I couldn't read yet (had trouble walking too). Once in my life I would like to see and read about it.

Been reading the type of majorities FDR, LBJ and Carter needed to get liberalism up and rolling. They were astounding. In 1979, Democrats had more of a majority in the House than the GOP had seats.

What's more astounding is that JFK...spoke and acted more like a conservative...than most elected conservatives today.

Yup. If JFK ran today, Dashcle would be calling him "out of the mainstream" and an "extremist".

There's only one thing to do. Republicans must retake the Senate.

Agreed! The beauty of doing this would only be inhanced by the fact that since Daschle and company have been so ruthless regarding the republicans fair chance to operate in the Senate that the next Republican majority leader could just leave the same rules in place that Daschle used and turn the tables on the Democrats and use their own tactics against them.

I think more simply put... the phrase goes "Turn-about is fair play."?
