It's intrusive. Since I started using moz, I haven't even seen that gator trash.

Spywareblaster will keep Gator from ever installing, no matter how it tries to sneak or bluff it's way onto your computer.
I just now updated the database from last week's and there are about 14 new spyware definitions to block:

It's an utter lie indeed. I have never once clicked on a box saying anything like, "I realize that this download contains Gator, which will taint my PC until the end of time."

Amen! I also use Norton anti-virus, Pop-Up Stopper, and ZoneAlarm. I haven't yet found software that will track spammers and beat them with a tire iron, but I'm working on it.

I've heard good things about panicware from a couple of different people now, but right now Spybot is doing the job for me. Not one popup in over three months!
Yep, WP 5.1 is the best program ever, at least for for medical transcription, IMO. I've used some specialized programs, written especially for medical transcription, in the past, but I've always made more money with WP 5.1, because it's so much faster and easier to use. When you're paid by the line transcribed, like I am, "fast and easy" is where it's at when you're looking for software.

I had no warning. I just visited their site and left. Then it started taking over my computer until my young relative made a house call and rooted it out. He said that it was a quasi legal virus/worm.

WP5.1 is for "real" typists!
I'm a court reporter, so I know what you're talking about!

LOL! When you find that software, Freepmail me with the name! Sounds like a real good idea!
To: Howlin
Boy, I wish I'd went into court reporting back when I was young and really a fast typist. I'm older now and my wrists are breaking down. Is court reporting still a pretty good-paying field? I haven't talked to anyone in the business for several years now (been transcribing 23 years come January 2004).
With the offshoring of transcription now, I've decided to go back to nursing school (and maybe on to a physician's assistant course) in a couple of years when my last little one goes to school. Right now, I get to be at home with him, as I was with my older three boys, so medical transcription has been a really great job, but it's about run its course for me.
I worked on a Word-based transcription program for five years for one company I worked for. I never made near the money with the Word-based programs that I've made with good ol' WP 5.1.
Nice talking with you, Howlin!

I haven't yet found software that will track spammers and beat them with a tire iron, but I'm working on it. Tell you what - you just write software to track them, and I'll handle the beating-with-a-tire-iron part...

Yes, it does pay very well, if you get your own customers and keep them!
BTW, have you tried a MS split keyboard? That really made a difference for me!

My fvorite pop up ever had the first box come up and ask me if I wanted such and such toolbar. I clicked "no". Another window come up and said something like "by clicking 'no', you are giving up the ability for great savings and free products. Are you sure you want to do this?" Then, beneath the "yes" and "no" boxes, there is another phrase - "by clicking 'no', you agree to accept our terms and conditions as outlined etc."
Really sleazy.
To: Chancellor Palpatine
That is just not RIGHT.

Yes, I tried the split keyboard, but I have little bitty short stubby fingers and small hands (I can wear children's gloves) so it slowed me down too much. I have several friends who swear by these keyboards and the keyboard doesn't slow them down a bit. And they do seem to relieve wrist strain. I find that if I use my wrist rest and position my chair correctly that it helps quite a bit. My worst problem is shoulder pain from all these years of typing, but it's helped a lot by how I raise or lower my chair.
Sounds like court reporting and medical transcription are a lot alike, in regard to getting your own clients to make the best money. I used to do that when I only had one child, but now that I have four, I need a more flexible schedule (part-time) so I'm subcontracting 3-1/2 days a week from a large transcription agency. That way, I still get all the tax breaks for my home office, buying my own equipment, etc. Since we have four kids, it's better for us, tax-wise, than me working as an employee for someone. I live in a rural area, too, with only a few doctors in the nearest town, and they don't use transcriptionists - they just hand-write their notes. The local hospital won't contract out any work, either.
Do you specialize as to what you transcribe? Do you do mostly depositions or transcribe in the courtroom? Do you transcribe from tapes or use the court reporting machine and then transcribe it? I'm interested because I transcribed a sort of deposition for a doctor once, with several different people talking basically at one time, and it was difficult to keep it straight in the report as to who was talking when. I have a lot of respect for people who transcribe depositions for a living because it's not easy work!
To: EagleMamaMT
Mostly depositions; and I use a Marantz and a stenomask!

Anybody know how we can get anti-Michael Schiavo ware???
.
To: Howlin
I bow to your greater abilities, Howlin! :) Depositions are one tough job!
BTW, what is a Marantz and a stenomask? I'm not familiar with either one. Do your clients pay you by the line or by the page?
I download voice wave files from a main computer bank and transcribe them, then send the transcription to a company FTP site. I've been in this field so long, I've transcribed from the old dictation belts (horrible, scratchy, tinny sound quality) and when I started the Selectric II was the standard and the IBM MagCard typewriter was the Holy Grail of typewriters. There sure have been a lot of changes in the last 23 years!

I spend a measurable amount of my career removing Gator and other similar garbage from PC's. I hate to piss people off, but they just don't need Webshots, flying hearts screen savers, IM's and Kazaa at work anyway. Guck Fator.
