Icelandic "Iceman" grabs shark to save men -

Thu 23 October, 2003 16:37 BST

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - An Icelandic fishing captain, known as "the Iceman" for his tough character, grabbed a 300 kg (660 lb) shark with his bare hands as it swam in shallow water towards his crew, according to a witness.

The skipper of the trawler "Erik the Red" was on a beach in Kuummiit, east Greenland, watching his crew processing a catch when he saw the shark swimming towards the fish blood and guts -- and his men.

Captain Sigurdur Petursson, known to locals as "the Iceman", ran into the shallow water and grabbed the shark by its tail. He dragged it off to dry land and killed it with his knife.

"He caught it just with his hands. There was a lot of blood in the sea and the shark came in and he thought it was dangerous," Frede Kilime, a hunter and fisherman who watched from the beach, told Reuters by phone from Greenland on Thursday.

Icelandic author and journalist Reynir Traustason, who knows the trawler captain, said the act was typical of the man.

"He's called 'the Iceman' because he isn't scared of anything," he said. "I know the people in that part of the world. They are really tough."

Yeah, I think The Iceman could probably make it through Ranger School!

Personal courage, physical toughness and a strong sense of what is right is what being a man used to be.

It's unfortunate that has become so rare as to be newsworthy.

Next time someone is about to be eaten by a 600 pound shark, have the liberals call in a metrosexual. He can put skin cream on while (s)he watches the slaughter, then head off to crisis counseling.

Is that from the MR. SLAVE episode?

Looks like they were just told to show up for "Earth Day".

as "the Iceman", ran into the shallow water and grabbed the shark by its tail. He dragged it off to dry land and killed it with his knife.

Just so we're clear on the concept: This guy dragged a 660 lb shark -- which was probably thrashing madly the whole time -- out of the water and on to dry land before he killed it.

He's not only brave, he's stronger'n hell!!!!

Sounds like a Greenalnd shark, which can grow over 20' long, and weigh 1,200 pounds.

LOL! The wife can ALWAYS scare a guy - they have an internal knack for knowing just which buttons to push!

Sounds like a likely candidate. About the only other shark of that size I can think of that would be in water that cold is the Porbeagle, and that would be a much harder on to catch by hand.

My first thought was a Bull Shark, but you're probably right.
I hadn't figured in the cold.

Too bad they didn't mention the species.

Just damn is right, if this were my captain, I know where my loyalty would be. I'd be pretty much willing to follow him into hell.

The man deserves respect, not because he killed the shark, but why he killed the shark.

Sharks also have a horrible rough skin that makes it very hard to grab without sacrificing some of your own skin.
